D&D: Five Magic Items Every Wizard Needs

It takes more than spells to make a Wizard. Because, as it turns out, you also need magic items that give you more spells.

Wizards are one of the classes that requires the least in terms of gear and magic items. They can, with the right selection of spells, make do with nothing but the clothes on their back (and a pouch full of material components). However, with the right magic items, a Wizard can take their power to the next level.

Here are five magic items that will level up any Wizard.

Pearl of Power

Spells make the Wizard. More than your subclass, or your feats, your selection of spells is how you customize your character. And with the Pearl of Power you get even more spells. This item gives you back one of your precious spell slots for just a single magic action. Sure, it’s only of up to level 3, but you get to effectively reload a spell. And nobody can be mad about that.

Hat of Many Spells

Speaking of spells, one of the limitations of a Wizard is that they only have access to whatever spells are in their personal spellbooks. Normally.

The Hat of Many Spells changes that, giving a Wizard the ability to reach in and pull out (cast) any spell they explicitly don’t know. Once per rest, if they can pass an easy Arcana check, they can cast any Wizard spell not in their book. And that gives the Wizard a flexibility few others can boast.

Wand of the War Mage

The Wand of the War Mage is a simpler item. But extremely valuable. If you’ve ever lamented the fact that you can’t really get a +1 sword but for spells, don’t worry, that’s exactly what this is. A wand of the war mage adds +1 (up to +3) to spell attack rolls and ignores half cover. Pretty solid stuff for any Wizard.

Ioun Stone of Mastery

And if you want to add a +1 bonus to all your other spells, the Ioun Stone of Mastery is basically that in a single cool little stone that orbits your head. The Ioun Stone of Mastery adds +1 to your Proficiency Bonus, which for those who aren’t familiar with the formula, means you get to add +1 to all your attack rolls and, more importantly, it is a +1 to your saving throw DC. Making you effectively several levels higher than you would be, otherwise.

Robes of the Archmagi

Wizards love robes. And if you’re gonna be put on your wizard hat, you may as well put on your robe, too. There are many great robes in the Dungeon Master’s Guide, but the Robes of the Archmagi are an incredible boon to any spellcaster. But Wizards especially.

These give you a base AC of 15 + yoru Dexterity Modifier, making it better than Mage Armor. And on top of that, you gain advantage on saving throws vs. spells and other magical effects, as well as an increase of +2 to spell attack rolls and saving throw DCs, which theoretically stacks with the proficiency bonus increase and the Wand of the War Mage bonus, meaning a properly kitted out Wizard can have a stupendously high bonus.

What are some of your favorite magic items for wizards?
