Levine Querido presents featured author Jonell Joshua at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 (SDCC). Jonell is the author of the autobiographical How Do I Draw These Memories (on sale April 2024). San Diego Comic-Con 2024 takes place July 25 to July 28, 2024.
In her book, Jonell explores her childhood living with her mother and her brothers while her mother struggled with mental health. She and her siblings sometimes lived with grandparents, moving and switching schools, when her mother couldn’t provide them the home they needed due to her bipolar disorder. It’s a powerful story of a family full of love figuring out the best ways for them to be together. The book is told in a multimedia format: with personal essays, illustrated memories, and comics-format chapters.
Jonell will be speaking about comics and mental health on the ‘How Comics Can Empower Marginalized Teens‘ panel at SDCC on Saturday, July 27th at 6pm in Room Grand 12/13 at the Marriott Marquis.
Jonell Joshua found her calling for art at a young age after she found her mother’s art portfolio in the bedroom of her childhood home. Hoping to emulate her mother’s talents, Jonell started drawing kid’s portraits in the cafeteria during lunch. Today Jonell is an award-winning illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York. Her professional work has explored a range of topics in editorial illustration and publication, including illustrating for Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real Life Tales of Black Girl Magic, The Queens of the Resistance series, and work featured in the film Selah and the Spades. She has made illustrations for clients including The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine, and NPR.
