The original painting for the cover art of the first ‘D&D coloring book’ is going up for Auction at Heritage Auctions on April 4th.

It’s not every day that you get a chance to own a piece of D&D history like this. But if you’ve ever wanted to, this may be your chance. Heritage Auctions will be placing the original painting for the wraparound cover of The Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Coloring Album up on the auction block as part of its upcoming ‘Comic Cover Art Showcase Auction.’

The Official AD&D Coloring Book Art Goes To Auction

The auction itself is a collection of nearly 80 different pieces of “comic art” that, as the name suggests, graced the covers of iconic titles. The Official AD&D Coloring Album is only one of many. You can find things like the original art for covers of a number of titles, including the Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1952-1954 Omnibus, Miles Morales Spider-Man #2, and the Barbie Jigsaw Puzzle.

All that to say, it’s an eclectic mix. Though the AD&D coloring book art is currently leading the pack in terms of bids. At press time, the leading bid was $3,300 with only Hellboy and Spider-Man coming close.

It’s not hard to see why, either. The artwork was done by Greg Irons, whose work as a poster designer led to a wild career as an artist. In addition to working for TSR, he has worked on things like The Yellow Submarine and a variety of underground comix publishers, as Heritage illustrates:

“This is a treasure about as rare as a Belt of Giant Strength! Many hardcore gamers have never even heard of this D&D coloring book. And the fantastic wraparound cover painting was created by Greg Irons, known for working as an animator on The Yellow Submarine, and his work in underground comix for Print Mint, Last Gasp, and other publishers. This work was created in acrylic on oversized illustration board and signed in the lower right of the 32″ x 21″ image area. In Excellent condition.”

The auction is set for April 4th. And from the look of things, with a month-ish to go, it’s going to be a heated one. At least for some of the titles. Though just wait and see as the artwork for that Barbie jigsaw puzzle blows everything else out of the water.

At any rate, you can check out the auction (or at least get a closer look at the coloring album) at the link below!
