‘Iron Man and His Awesome Friends’ Greenlit; Toho Buys GKids; ‘The Beginning After the End’ Anime; ‘Creature Commandos’ and ‘Watchmen: Chapter II’ Trailers; Bad Idea’s ‘The Lot’ Gets Adapted; ‘Rick and Morty’ Renewed Through S12

New York Comic Con brought in a whole wave of Hollywood news, and it’s, once again, time for a round-up!

Disney Jr. has greenlit an Iron Man and His Awesome Friends series, the company announced.  This pre-school animated series follows young Tony Stark (Iron Man), Riri Williams (Ironheart) and Amadeus Cho (Iron Hulk) as they learn to protect the world.  The series follows the success of Spidey and His Amazing Friends (see “New ‘Spidey’ Pre-School Series“), which is now in its third season.  This series will stream on Disney Jr. and Disney+.

Toho Co., Ltd. has acquired a 100% equity share of GKIDS, the American distributor of Studio Ghibli releases and other anime, the companies announced.  Toho distributes Studio Ghibli in Japan, and distributes a variety of titles, including the hit Godzilla Minus One, in North America (see “Anime, Kaiju Break Box Office Records“).  GKids will retain its own brand and management team.

Crunchyroll will stream a new anime adaptation of The Beginning After the End Tapas webtoon and web novel worldwide except non-India Asia, the companies announced.  This is the first anime adaptation of an American web novel and webtoon.  Yen Press has released five volumes of webtoon collections, with more on the way.  The anime series will be produced by Slow Curve with animation production by studio A-CAT.  Web novel and webtoon creator TurtleMe is executive producer.  Launch date was not announced.

Max released an official trailer for Creature Commandos (see below).  This new, original animated series will begin streaming on December 5, 2024 (see “‘Creature Commandos’“).

Warner Bros. Entertainment revealed a new trailer for Watchmen Chapter II (see below). The second installment of this series (see “‘Watchmen’ Animated Series“) begins with Dr. Manhattan exiled to Mars, Ozymandias survived an assassination attempt and Rorschach has been arrested.  This movie will be coming to digital on November 25 and Blu-ray/4K HD on December 3

Bad Idea’s The Lot will be adapted into a screenplay for film by Akela Cooper (M3GAN), the company announced.  Cooper will also produce alongside Bad Idea’s Dinesh Shamdasani (see “Bad Idea Executive Team“) and Benjamin Simpson.  Development financing is provided by Smartest Termite and producers Andrew Galllina and Shahin Chandrasoma.

Rick and Morty has been picked up by Adult Swim for another two seasons, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The series has been on the air since 2013, and survived the recent ousting of Justin Roiland, the series’ co-creator, in 2023 over domestic abuse charges.  Roiland was later cleared of the charges due to insufficient evidence, but Adult Swim had already recast the voices of Rick and Morty by that point (see “Adult Swim Cuts Ties with ‘Rick & Morty’ Co-Creator“).
