Written by Mark Waid, Absolute Power as a whole has been a fun read. At times, it’s been a bit deeper than you’d expect from a “summer comic event,” and other times it has leaned into its grand stage and concept. Absolute Power #4 delivers a finale that’s more summer popcorn blockbuster than anything else as the heroes rally to defeat Amanda Waller.
Absolute Power #4 is absolutely a fun read with grand and exciting visuals, but its beats are largely predictable. A lot of the event has been as a whole. But still, Waid weaves a tale that’s enjoyable with action, heart, and some surprises, but overall it has felt like the culmination of a long played out story (which it has been). That’s clear in this issue which leads from the “Dawn of DC” to the next phase, “All In.”
The issue is generally predictable in that the heroes rally and some break off on a special mission to help win the battle. Both face massive odds against them. Even with this, Waid creates tension as those odds stack up and feel like they grow greater with each page. There’s a tension that goes along with the excitement of it all.
That’s all helped by the art of Dan Mora which is fantastic as expected. With color by Alejandro Sanchez and lettering by Ariana Maher, the comic has multiple pages and panels that’ll leave you lingering and sifting through the action. The characters have multiple “fuck yeah” moments as they battle against Waller and her forces. Visually, the comic’s emotional build is highlighted by The Flash’s mission as villains from throughout the multiverse threaten to break through to tip the scale in Waller’s favor and it hits emotional perfection when Barry’s friends arrive to support him. It really shows off the amazing team that is Waid and Mora. The duo are in sync and it shows.
Absolute Power #4 is a rather predictable comic overall, but it has specifics that are still surprises. The ending leaves things in an interesting spot and sets up what’s to come in multiple ways. It’s a comic that ends one chapter for DC while setting up the next one to come.
