Heritage Auctions has placed a CGC 7.0 Whiz Comics #2 with off-white to white pages up on the block at their June 20-23, 2024 Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction.
Whiz Comics #2, featuring the first appearance of Captain Marvel and Dr. Sivana, is one of the most sought after comics from the Golden Age. It is also a very tough comic to find in decent condition with only 61 copies noted on the CGC census, 32 of which haven’t been restored. The census also notes that there are only two copies of this book in CGC 7.0 and only two that are known to be in a higher grade. The bidding on this book is up to $288,000 pre-auction (buyer’s premium included).
The other heavy-hitters in this auction include a CGC 4.5 Detective Comics #27, which is already at $490,000 in pre-auction bidding, and a CGC 4.0 Batman #1. There is also a few different copies of Marvel Comics #1 up, a Captain America Comics #1, and a CGC 9.2 Tales of Suspense #39. On another note, there seems to be three comics that are bidding somewhat at a bargain, thus far, in this auction: a CGC 6.5 Amazing Fantasy #15 ($78,000), a CGC 6.0 All-Star Comics #8 ($57,600), and a CGC 8.5 Fantastic Four #1. Higher grade copies of these copies have all gone for over a $1 million previously (see “‘Fantastic Four’ #1 Breaches the Million Dollar Mark“).
