Steve Niles to Write ‘Red Sonja’ for the First Time

Horror writer Steve Niles, best known for series such as 30 Days of Night and Criminal Macabre, will write a Red Sonja series for the first time ever. Dynamite will launch Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned, by Niles and artist Alessandro Amoruso, in April 2024 with a storyline that takes the heroine and a new companion on a treasure-hunting expedition to a hidden city where the streets are filled with the bones of two armies who were wiped out by a warlock’s curse. The first issue will have a main cover by Joshua Middleton and variants by Joseph Michael Linsner, Philip Tan, cosplayer Rachel Hollon, and John Tyler Christopher.

“Red Sonja is such a classic character,” Niles said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “She was ahead of her time, an incredible warrior, pretty much unkillable and always ready to fight. When I was approached about writing her, I made sure it was okay to bring in some violence and great monsters for her to fight.”

Dynamite launched Savage Red Sonja in November 2023 (see “Preview: ‘Savage Red Sonja’ #1“).
