DC’s ‘Elseworlds’ to Return in 2024

DC Comics announced the return of its Elseworlds line of comics, out-of-continuity tales featuring well-known characters, coming in 2024.  Three are sequels to fan favorites, with three others featuring Batman or Green Lantern.

The sequels are:

  • Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age by Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernandez — twelve issues that expand on Gotham by Gaslight, created by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, by introducing that 19th century world’s Justice League.
  • Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter by Jay Kristoff and Tirso Cons — six issues set in the world created by Tom Taylor, where the assassin Deathstroke fights for his frozen land in an epic fantasy inspired by Norse myth.
  • DC vs. Vampires: World War V by Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt — twelve issues in which humanity fights against Barbara Gordon, Queen of the Vampires, in a new Ice Age.

The new takes are:

  • Batman the Barbarian by Greg Smallwood — six issues retelling Batman’s origin on a brutal medieval Earth.
  • Green Lantern: Dark by Tate Brombal and Werther DellEdera — seven issues in the dark fantasy genre set on a post-apocalyptic world populated by monsters where the Green Lantern has been missing.
  • Batman: Nightfire by Clay and Seth Mann — six issues of action mystery where Bruce Wayne travels to the past to try to prevent a tragedy.

Beginning in 1991 with Batman: Holy Terror by Alan Brennert and Norm Breyfogle, the Elseworlds imprint published DC superhero stories set outside regular continuity.  Some of the best-known titles include Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, Batman & Dracula: Red Rain by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones, and Justice League: The Nail by Alan Davis.  Elseworlds were no longer published after 2004, with one exception: Superman: The Last Family of Krypton, in 2010.
