D&D: Lest We Forget, Boo Is Coming In 2022

One last tidbit about the future of D&D to close out your weekend. Boo, the miniature giant space hamster is coming to a D&D book in 2022.

If you are a fan of the absolute masterpieces that are the original Baldur’s Gate trilogy, then you will doubtless have met the original miniature giant space hamster, Boo, who accompanies everyone’s favorite Rashemi Ranger into battle.

The dynamic duo of Minsc and Boo made a lasting impression on gamers as they explored the city of Baldur’s Gate and found themselves embroiled in the Bhaalspawn saga in which a bunch of adventurers, imbued with the power of Bhaal fought to ascend a vacant throne. Among other things.

But, naturally, players latched on to the definitely real miniature giant space hamster, who was often encouraged to “go for the eyes.” All of this is worth mentioning, because WotC has traded out early cover art for one of the upcoming new books which features none other than Boo.

The unnamed book, coming in 2022, has many speculating that Spelljammer might possibly be in the works. Why, you ask? Because Giant Space Hamsters are a very real part of D&D’s old lore. In the past, they were part and parcel with the original Spelljammer setting, where they were used by gnomes to generate power for their ships:

Giant space hamsters were usually peaceful creatures, but wild varieties were known to be more aggressive. In particular, female giant space hamsters protected their litters fiercely. Their main weapon was a powerful bite. In some cases, a giant space hamster could also stuff a small creature such as a gnome in one of its cheek pouches, storing the victim there until spitting it out when a food source was found.

Giant Space Hamsters came in a variety of flavors, including Sabre-Toothed, Armor Plated, and miniature. With a big nod to Spelljammer plenty of players are clamoring for an official Spelljammer setting book, but, it’s worth pointing out that’s only one possibility.

In the Future of D&D panel, the lead design team revealed that more adventure anthologies like Candlekeep Mysteries and Ghosts of Saltmarsh were on the way. Which could mean that we see a series of adventures set in Baldur’s Gate.

Whatever the reason, be sure and keep an eye out for Boo in 2022, lest he go for your eyes.
