‘Batman – Part II’ Dated; DC Animated Features Plans; ‘Star Trek: Picard’ S3 Trailer; Mangold on ‘Swamp Thing’; Hulu Renews ‘Hit Monkey’

The lusty month of February has arrived and Hollywood news is getting hot and heavy.  Time for another round-up!

New DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have revealed that they are aiming at releasing two movies and two HBO Max series per year.  The new movie count per year is half of the number currently on the 2023 DC release slate, which will see the release of four movies over the course of this year (see “Best in Shows — 2023“).

In addition to the 2025 date for Superman: Legacy (see “Ten DC Movies and TV Series“), Gunn and Safran also announced a date for The Batman – Part II (see “‘The Batman’ Sequel“), which will release on October 3, 2025 (see “Best in Shows – 2025“).

Gunn was generally positive about continuing the DC animated features that have been released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, such as the recent Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse release (see New DC Animated Feature), and indicated they will be integrated into the new media universe.  Some of that stuff will continue as Elseworlds, but a lot of other stuff we’re starting to bring into animation with (Warner Bros. Animation President) Sam Register so that we’ll have things that are connected with this,Gunn said in a piece on the DC blog.

Paramount released a trailer for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard (see below).  The final season will feature several members of the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, including Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Michael Dorn (see “‘ST: TNG’ Stars in ‘Picard’ S3“), and will release on February 16, 2023.

In other DC news, James Mangold has been in talks to helm the Swamp Thing movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Mangold is reportedly a major fan of the character, and pitched some of his ideas to Gunn and Safran recently, but has a pretty full slate at the moment.  He has at least one film to make beyond Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits theaters (see “‘Indy 5’“); he will be doing a Bob Dylan biopic for Paramount, so a Swamp Thing film would have to come after that was complete.

Hulu has renewed Hit-Monkey for Season 2, according to Variety.  Hit-Monkey was in a group of four Marvel Hulu series greenlit near the end of the Jeph Loeb era (see “Marvel TV in the MCU“), but only two made it to air.  Hit-Monkey will be the last Marvel TV series on Hulu; M.O.D.O.K. was cancelled last May.
