With the live-action Netflix series set to premiere later this year, Dark Horse has announced two Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novels: A new story, Avatar: The Last Airbender—Azula in the Spirit Temple, and a new omnibus collecting the full storyline of Avatar: The Last Airbender—Imbalance.
The creative team for Avatar: The Last Airbender—Azula in the Spirit Temple is writer Faith Erin Hicks, artist Peter Wartman, and colorist Adele Matera, whose most previous Avatar graphic novel won the 2022 Ringo Award for Best Kids Comic or Graphic Novel. The new graphic novel puts the character Azula in the spotlight as she faces down a new danger. The 80-page paperback will be available in bookstores on September 26, 2023, and in comic shops on September 27, and will have an MSRP of $12.99.
Avatar: The Last Airbender—Imbalance Omnibus collects the original trilogy in a paperback omnibus for the first time; the previous collection was a hardcover library edition. The 224-page omnibus will be released on August 8, 2023, in bookstores and August 9 in comic shops, with an MSRP of $24.99.
The Avatar graphic novels are consistently among the top sellers in the Kids’ category (see “Top Kids Graphic Novel Franchises – Fall 2021”). Three animated Avatar: The Last Airbender features are currently in development, and Netflix is working on a live-action series as well (see “Three ‘Last Airbender’ Features”). The first animated film is scheduled to premiere in October 2025.
