The National Toy Hall of Fame inducted Pokémon TCG, as part of the class of 2026.

The ultra popular TCG has garnered yet another celebratory distinction as it continues its historic sales run that started in 2024 (see “‘Pokemon TCG’ Surges Back to Life“).  It was selected as a Hall of Fame toy from a list of finalist toys, including Bop It!, Mahjong, Monster High dolls, Mouse Trap, Polly Pocket, Sorry!, Tickle Me Elmo, and Yahtzee.

“Pokémon TCG’s widespread appeal and global presence are undeniable,” said National Museum of Play at the Strong Curator Mirek Stolee.  “The Pokémon TCG successfully adapted card game formulas established by its predecessors, making it more accessible and infusing it with the lovable Pokémon creatures.”

Pokémon TCG was inducted alongside three other toys: Bingo, Care Bears, and of all things, the slide.  The slide is probably the most avant-garde of these selections, primarily because most people just take it for granted as a run-of-the-mill, 20th century playground fixture.  However, the slide does do some heavy-lifting as a way to tire out children of all ages and has actually been produced by various companies as a children’s toy, most notably by Playskool.  Finally, the slide has seemed to receive some of the respect it deserves.
