Only nineties kids will remember Lugia and Ho-Oh… Actually, that’s probably not strictly true. They’re two of the most popular legendary Pokémon out there, and they’ve been printed on a wide selection of Pokémon Cards over the years. In any case, they’re both about to get another card in the Pokémon TCG’s upcoming 30th Celebration expansion. Let’s take a look.
Some of the Best Pokémon cards are legendaries, since they don’t need to evolve, and they’re often given a huge amount of power to live up to their fearsome reputations. Equally, however, there are also a massive number of legendaries out there that simply don’t live up to the label, with impractical attacks that just aren’t worth using. How does this avian duo stack up?
Lugia’s card is a modernized reimagining of the original printing of Lugia from Neo Genesis, the set that introduced second generation Pokémon to the TCG way back in the year 2000. It has 30 more hp than its 26 year old counterpart, deals an additional 160 damage with Elemental Blast, and is weak to lightning rather than psychic. Given that you need to discard three energy cards 0f different types from Lugia in order to use its only attack, it’s a difficult card to play with, but 250 damage is pretty significant, especially for a basic Pokémon that only gives away a single prize card when it gets KOed.
Ho-Oh, meanwhile, doesn’t seem to be based on a pre-existing card. It has a healing ability, similar to several other Ho-Oh cards, demonstrating that it is inspired by a Phoenix, with the ability to rise from the ashes, but it’s nothing like its first ever printing. Ho-Oh’s damage output is significantly lower, when compared to Lugia, and its healing ability is helpful, although also costly to utilize.
Currently, we only know that these two cards appear with a regular art treatment as collector numbers 12, and 121 in 30th Celebration. Whether they’ll show up again as Illustration Rares isn’t currently clear.
