30th Celebration has a fantastic Base set Charizard figurine, but it’s only coming out in one country

I’m starting to get seriously jealous of all the cool, exclusive Pokémon TCG stuff that only comes out in China. It’s one thing when it’s a sweet SAR card, but now the lucky country is getting a special Charizard box, with a darling figurine that’s cleverly modelled on the original Base set card.

The ‘commemorative figure gift box’ is part of China’s product slate for 30th Celebration, and it comes with a jumbo sized version of base set Charizard, marked with the 30th anniversary Pikachu stamp. It also comes with 15 of the anniversary booster packs, which means – as with any Pokémon TCG product that contains cards – good luck to fans trying to get hold of one.

The box comes out September 16, with the rest of this Pokémon TCG set. It costs 780 yuan (about $115) which means that on a price per pack basis, it’s not a great deal unless you want the figurine.

Honestly though, who wouldn’t? It’s a great rendition of an illustration burned into the mind of every 90s-early 2000s kid. I really like how the dark black lines are drawn to make the 3D model match the 2D drawing – it almost looks cell-shaded.

The jumbo card makes it hard to ascertain the model’s size from the image. The website states it’s 13.3 cm long and 18.7 cm wide, but gives no height measurements. Modern jumbo cards are typically 13.65 × 18.73 cm, so it looks like it’s maybe 12-13 cm tall. Base set Charizard is a compact, hunched type of beastie.

These aren’t the only 30th Celebration figurines coming out in China. There are also 13 Pikachu figures, each one matching the art of one of the Pikachus from this set. These are far more affordable, selling for about $13.
