Pikachu is probably the most famous mascot in the world. There are people out there who have never picked up a Pokémon card or played a Pokémon game who can still absolutely identify the electric mouse on sight because the character is just that ubiquitous. Because of this, Pikachu is featured on more than 230 Pokéon cards. Its evolved form Raichu is not so lucky, appearing on less than 60 cards and often gettting outshone by its more famous predecessor.
The upcoming 30th Celebration Pokémon TCG set includes a collection of 30 special anniversary Pikachu cards drawn by some of the game’s most beloved artists. It also features two distinct Pikachu ex cards and a reprint of the shocking powerhouse Pikachu and Zekrom GX. Meanwhile, it hasn’t yet been officially confirmed whether a Raichu card will even be making an appearance in the set.
This isn’t to say Raichu has gotten no love over the course of the TCG’s history. One of the rarest Pokémon cards out there is actually a Raichu, but it certainly gets less time in the spotlight compared to its smaller, cuter counterpart.
At least Raichu has gotten more representation than Pichu (the first stage of the evolution line), who has currently only appeared on 20 Pokémon cards. Then again, despite being a baby, Pichu is a playable character in Super Smash Brothers, while Raichu is not. This means that the big orange bolt slinger will tragically never get the chance to hang out with Chrom from Fire Emblem.
We’ve not seen all of the spoilers for the 30th Celebration set yet, so it’s possible that the Pokémon Company are just holding Raichu in reserve. Personally, I really hope to see the entire evolution line making an appearance, ideally teamed up together in some adorable Illustration Rare artwork.
