August 8th was international cat day (quite why 08/08 was chosen to mark this occasion when cats have nine lives isn’t entirely clear, but that’s a whole other article). To commemorate this feline occasion, The Pokémon Company previewed two brand new Meowth Pokémon Cards that will feature in the upcoming 30th Celebration set. Let’s talk about them…
30th Celebration will feature both a regular version of Meowth, as well as a printing of the Alolan form of the Scratch Cat Pokémon. Both of the cards have illustration rare artwork designed to deliberately contrast them. The pair are living in apartment blocks opposite one another, with Kantonian Meowth taking a nap during the day, while Alolan Meowth is up and active through the night. It turns out Meowths are nocturnal, who knew?
The artwork also contains some neat easter eggs, with both cats showing up in the artwork of their counterpart. Alolan Meowth, or at least its lower half, can be seen wiggling around at the top of regular Meowth’s artwork, while Kantonian Meowth is creeping around atop the vents in the Alolan Meowth illustration.
While Galarian Meowth doesn’t seem to be getting its own card in the 30th celebration set, or at least not one that has currently been previewed, we can see the sharp clawed cat at the bottom of both of the pieces of artwork here, napping during the day but sitting up almost alarmingly straight at night.
