I never quite recovered from my first few games of the survival horror video game Dead by Daylight. However, those looking for a more sedate version of the tense four-versus-one, survivor-versus-killer experience are in luck. The Dead by Daylight board game is getting a new crowdfunding campaign that’ll give fans the chance to get their hands on the tabletop adaptation of the formula.
Due to commence on August 11, the Dead by Daylight: The Board Game – Auris Box campaign promises access to the core game along with every previous expansion and a fancy new storage solution for the sheer volume of miniatures and other accoutrements on offer. For those keeping score, the Gatekeeper, Unbroken, Malicious and Lightbringer expansions are all on offer, alongside upgrade kits for the core game and the fancy new Auris Box, designed to hold the entire experience.
The board game follows the same rhythm as the video game from which it was adapted. Accommodating up to five players, four survivors must attempt to repair four generators, open the exit to the trial grounds, and get the heck out of there. While this is going on, a killer will be aiming to hunt down the survivors, wound them, and place them on sacrificial hooks to appease the enigmatic Entity.
In mechanical terms, players plan their moves in secret, revealing new locations on the board as they execute them. They’ll then interact with features at the given location in an attempt to get an edge against their assailant. It’s reminiscent of the tension at the heart of Betrayal at House on the Hill, one of the best board games ever made.
Though we don’t yet know the price points for the campaign, the dizzying array of minis on offer across the campaign is staggering in its breadth. That said, the minis do not look as though they come painted, so those looking for a splash of color may need to bring a paintbrush.
