Arcana Unleashed, the brand new, magic-focused D&D sourcebook, isn’t even technically out for another month. But Wargamer Mollie got her hands on a copy at Gen Con to reveal the best and worst Arcana Unleashed subclasses – and she’s not the only one already mining the book for sick plays. Fans in the r/onednd subreddit have uncovered a filthy Wizard/Sorcerer combo that allows infinite spell slots, and it involves a new spell with a delightfully suggestive name!
Reddit user Gear_ shared the so-called “infinite spell slot glitch” just a couple days after Arcana Unleashed went on early sale in D&D‘s massive Gen Con offensive last weekend, celebrating (or perhaps commiserating) the discovery of “our first infinite money glitch in [D&D] 2024”.
The key to this exploit is the new 5th level Divination spell Mordenkainen’s Lucubration – which lets you expend a 5th level spell slot in exchange for restoring two 1st or 2nd level spell slots. ‘Lucubration’, of course, means intense scholarly study, especially studying by lamplight – it’s from the Latin ‘Lux’ meaning light. It has nothing to do with ‘lubrication’, which is the use of goopy fluids to help objects move smoothly over one another, like heavy metal gears or body parts. Glad we cleared that one up.
As Gear_ notes, this “glitch” is hardly game breaking, as it only works from level 15 onwards, and you have to multiclass heavily between Wizard and Sorcerer to do it. Mixing up the DnD classes is highly recommended for fun and profit, but it can leave you pretty underpowered at times, until you hit that sweet synergy you were after.
Besides, precious few D&D campaigns even get as high as 15th level in the first place, with levels one to ten by far the most popular window for play. So this sick broken combo, bro is unlikely to be setting tabletops on fire the world over – but it’s still a cool curiosity to try out. Once. For a joke.
Anyway, here’s how the infinite spell slot glitch works:
- Be a Wizard and choose the Diviner subclass.
- At 6th level, you gain the Expert Divination class feature – meaning when you cast a Divination spell of level 2+, you regain one used spell slot of any level below that of the spell you just cast.
- Also be a Sorcerer (any subclass) – and get to 9th level, so you have 9 total Sorcery Points available.
- Cast Mordenkainen’s Lucubration with a 5th level spell slot, restoring two expended 2nd level spell slots.
- This also triggers Expert Divination, restoring one 4th level spell slot.
- Use the Font of Magic Sorcerer class feature to convert those two 2nd level spell slots and one 4th level spell slot into 8 Sorcery Points.
- Use Font of Magic again to exchange 7 Sorcery Points for a single 5th level spell slot – leaving you one Sorcery Point left over.
- Repeat for infinite spell slots (at least until your DM kicks you out of the group).
As anyone who’s played D&D for very long knows, these types of ‘cheese builds’ and exploits aren’t anything to get worked up about; they’re just amusing anomalies. When a game’s been updating and adapting itself with new rules for four decades, you’re going to find the odd hilarious loophole – this is just the latest one.
Before this lubey loophole, there was the infamous ‘CoffeeLock’, which theoretically allowed Sorlocks (Sorcerer/Warlock multiclass characters) to generate infinite spell slots by never taking a Long Rest, sticking only to short ones. Inevitably, the so-called ‘lubelock’ won’t be the last, either.
Unlike with cheesy combos in competitive games like Magic: The Gathering, however, in Dungeons & Dragons, the win condition isn’t beating anyone, but creating a satisfying story together – which is kind of the opposite of your party’s caster hitting 15th level and suddenly becoming God. TLDR: any DM worth their salt is going to disallow this glitch, so it’s for amusing novelty purposes only. You have been warned.
