Playing a scoundrel type character in D&D? Here are five magic items that should prove essential for any ne’er-do-well.
One of my favorite fantasy archetypes is the Scoundrel. They’re always a rogue, if not a Rogue (the class). But whether you’re a Bard or a Fighter or a Paladin with a creative way of interpreting their oath, playing a scoundrel of any kind can be a lot of fun.
We all want to be the cool, a-little-bit-anti-hero who can draw fast, sure, but thinks/talks even faster. D&D offers many ways to play this character, but here are some great ways to accessorize.
Gloves of Thievery

Even if you’re not a Rogue, chances are if you’re playing a scoundrel character, you’re going to want to do something that requires light fingers at some point. Whether that’s pickpocketing someone or trying to conceal a weapon, there are any uses of the Sleight of Hand skill that can be extremely scoundrel-y.
And for that, the gloves of thievery come in handy. They add a solid +5 bonus to Sleight of Hand checks. This stacks with Expertise and Advantage, meaning you can really jack up your bonus and possibly even pull the old ‘switch the artifact with a bag of sand’ trick without setting off the ancient defenses of the temple.
Perfume of Bewitching

If there’s another thing that scoundrels are known for, it’s talking their way into and out of trouble. And for that, the Perfume of Bewitching is an extremely useful common magic item (so it’s not even hard to come by). One application enhances your ability to be persuasive, granting you Advantage on any Persuasion check while within 5 feet of a target. Spritz some on, and let your silver tongue go to work with ease.
Heward’s Handy Haversack

Any good scoundrel always has just the right tool for the job. And in order to pull that off, you’ve got to be able to carry it with you. That’s where Heward’s Handy Haversack comes in. It’s not just a Bag of Holding, it’s a bag that knows what you want, when you want it, and can retrieve it for you from the depths of the interdimensional pocket reality contained within. Whatever you need is always right on top.
Charlatan’s Die

Scoundrels often know that you never want to know the odds. And to help defy the odds, especially if you’re a gambler, there’s the Charlatan’s Die. This is a common magic item that always rolls whatever number you want it to. Perfect for any scoundrel who needs to establish that they aren’t just a heart of gold.
Luck Blade

A scoundrel’s luck is legendary, even when they aren’t cheating. And for this, there’s no better scoundrelly weapon than a Luck Blade. This +1 sword (of any kind) gives you a +1 saving throw, and can also let you reroll one failed d20 test, because sometimes your luck just won’t run out. It also might have up to 3 wishes (1d3) allowing you to write your own fate, like a true scoundrel.
