Warhammer 40K Tourney Battle Report – Emperor’s Children Defiler Rush

I took Emperor’s Children to my first Warhammer 40k 11th Edition event with the Hee Yaw GT in Killeen, TX. Here’s how they did!

This past weekend I got to play my first Warhammer 40k 11th Edition event with the Hee Yaw GT in Killeen, TX.  This event was started by a good friend Marcus Glowczak and his tournament partner Tyler Parker.  I haven’t had a chance to make it to one of his events yet due to summer time and family obligations.  I happen to get a chance to drive up to Killeen this weekend and decided to take the following Emperor’s Children list to the event.  I finished painting a Fulgrim for myself finally and thought – why not try this model out for the weekend.

Here is the list I ended up taking.  I spent a lot of my Thursday cleaning up some basing as well as finishing up 3 Fiends of Slaanesh.  Those models are a pain in the butt to build and I have broken a few of the tails as I tried to get all my paint on them.

Emperor’s Children Defiler Rush – My Cunning Plan

The idea of the list is to throw Fulgrim and some Defilers at you and see what you figure out.  It also has some utility as well as a few second wave things that could hurt.  Who knows if it will work but this seems like a fun build to try out.  Plus I can throw some close combat Defilers at you that could have Sustain Hits 2 on a 5+. It is a pretty simple army – the idea is I plan on moving things fast, punching you in the mouth, and hopefully doing well enough with that.  Overall I went 4-1 with it and took home Best Emperor’s Children and 13th overall.  This isn’t too bad with a list I haven’t played yet – but hey if you don’t know what to play you should play Purge the Foe.  That’s your Just the Tip from the Goatboy.

The Battle Report – Breakdown

Round 1 – Deployment A – Garret – Tau mixed arms list with a lot of Kroot and he is playing Purge the Foe too – so it is a Meat Grinder Mission.

He had some Suits, some Kroot, Farsite, more suits, Ghost Keels, and more Kroot.  This was a game where I ended up going 2nd and Garrett slowly moved up to try and score some secondary points.  I got to move up, killed one unit, and then poisoned some stuff.  It was not an exciting killy turn for the Goatboy as Fulgrim kinda whiffed into a Ghost Keel.  Lucky for me the clap back wasn’t very good (a theme you will see in some other games).  I was able to survive that, clap back even harder, and just meat grind my way to victory.  Garrett was a great player and just had some abysmal dice rolls into Fulgrim and friends.  The game ended up 98 to 45 for me.

Round 2 – Deployment B – Dan with some Tyranid big monsters. 3 Norns, some of the Plasma dudes, 2 Tyrannofex, and a few other things.

I’ve played Dan before in a local event as he lives in the Killeen area.  His wife is real nice and it is just a nice overall game.  His army looks cool and I love the big monsters.  He is all about holding those objectives with hard to kill Norns and he tried to do that.  I got lucky surviving some damage from some Tyranofexs (-1 to hit has helped a lot) and set up some turns where I killed things pretty quickly.  I gutted his center and was able to wrack up some points. The game ended up 87 to 75 for me.

Round 3 – Deployment C – Robert with my nemesis Drukhari. I don’t think I win too often against them and this time it was the same thing.

Robert has a bunch of Dark Eldar stuff as usual.  Everything can hit pretty hard, he has a ton of movement, and some Dark Lances.  He had to Triangulate objectives and I had to Consecrate.  I think if I didn’t lose a Flawless blade to a crack back from two Scourges (1’s and 2’s are my banes!) I might have had a chance.  I went full hog with Fulgrim which netted me a kill and a Consecrate point but it wasn’t enough in the end. Robert is local and a very tight player who gives you rough as heck game.  It’s one of those great learning games as I figure out what I should do with the list in the future. The score was 94 to 90 and my first loss of the weekend.

Round 4 – Deployment A – Noah with his Speeder/Bike heavy Dark Angels list

Noah is a good buddy of mine I met at a Houston event a few years ago.  We exchanged numbers and we chat from time to time as he is a cool dude.  He loves those Dark Angels and this time around it was another Triangulate vs Consecate match up.  This time around his dice failed him so bad where he failed to wound Fulgrim and some Defilers that really sealed the game.  I got at least an extra round of nonsense for so many things which let me quickly get up to 3 consecrates on objectives and then his home objective as well.  I thought his dice rolls were bad but the next game was pretty insane.  We had lunch and talked about some things he wants to do differently with this list.  I love that Noah keeps with the Dark Angels and just made what felt like a true Dark Angels list full of Speeders and bikes. 90 to 71 to me.

Round 5 – Deployment B – Aaron with his amazingly painted Imperial Knights army.

I thought Noah’s dice were bad but Aaron took the cake.  The amount of 1’s into 1’s were absurd.  I think there were 6 of them in this game as well as a ton of 1’2 and 2’2 rerolled into all 1’s for the amount of shots.  He is running a Dominus heavy army full of Valiants and one Castellan with a few small friends.  He utilizes the detachment to let his guns get Assault so his Knights move so fast it is gnarly.  I go hard with Fulgrim into 2 Armigers to kill them both with some shooting help and then he survives all the Dominus’s pointing at him and the Defiler survives too.  Like I said it is a wild game.  From there I killed 2 Dominus’s and an Armiger.  I pull his home objective from him as well and just proceeded to get the game ended quick.  Aaron went thru so many dice trying to find anything that would help out.  It was a wild game.  I got 97 to his 43.

Emperor’s Children Defiler Rush – The Verdict

I went 4-1 for the event and didn’t have to play the top cut to figure out the final winners.  Yeehaw was a lot of fun and this is my first time to get to go out there.  The last few times has coincided with a vacation so I never got a chance to drive up.  It is about a 5o minute drive from my house so I was able to go in the morning and play 2 days of games.  Marcus and Tyler did a great job.  The terrain was pretty tall but it all fit on the GW areas they had cut out of MDF.  I liked how you could actually hide some things behind the walls even though it was a pain to move some things around.

I liked they gave out a ton of stuff thru the raffle that helped support the Texas VFW (raised $1100) and just felt like a great time.  The AC worked great, the floor was carpeted, and it was a nice venue/hotel.  I sorta wished I stayed so I could hang out with some friends there from Texas as I have been kind of absent after breaking my leg in January. Lucky for me I am moving fine and even running a bit.  Marcus is a painter so a ton of stuff was given out from the paint side of things and it was great just to see everyone having a good time with 11th.

My thoughts on 11th is that it works a lot better than 10th did at the start but needs some tweaks.  I think Orks are way over tuned and just too cheap.  Defilers are still pretty dang amazing as well so I am sure they need to be looked at as well.  Fulgrim was pretty awesome when he would yeet up the table like some kind of crazed Toddler ready to ripe those snacks out of your hand.  I only broke a few models this time around but they were all at the glue points.

After this I plan on making the drive up to North Dallas with my Family and the Emperor’s Children again for the Lonestar Open.  I don’t know if I will play the same list but the idea of running a bunch of big jerks makes me happy.  I might shift it over to some CSM as I haven’t played my Maesters of the Maelstrom I painted up when the models first came out.  Huron is looking rather sad and wants to beat up on some enemies.  Will see as it gets closer to that event and whatever GW does to fix things up.
