Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship Overview
Fate of the Fellowship is a Lord of the Rings inspired game that uses the Pandemic system. Players take on the roles of two heroes to defend Middle Earth from advancing shadow troops. They must complete objectives and help Frodo avoid the Nazgul on his way to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring.
Like other Pandemic-system games, Fate of the Fellowship is a cooperative strategy game where the odds always seem stacked against you. It may feel like you’re making progress on a few objectives, but then a new danger will pop up, giving you yet another thing to worry about. But this keeps the game much more exciting than some other non-competitive cooperative games. You have a foe – but that foe happens to be the game itself.
Games also offer a ton of replayability with twenty-four different objectives, and each of the thirteen characters having their own special abilities.
How To Play Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship
If you’ve played Pandemic, Fate of the Fellowship will probably feel very familiar. The board is split up into regions that enemies will spread out over and attack. Players each take two characters to control and complete actions as these characters while trying to keep their hope meter high, their threat meter low, and working together to save Middle-earth.
Turns consist of each player taking up to four actions with one of their characters and one with the other, drawing player and shadow cards, and resolving the shadow cards. Shadow cards are one of the ways that the game will play against you. There are six standard character actions, which include Travel, Fellowship, Prepare, Muster, Attack, and Capture
Players take turns completing their actions and trying to keep up with the constant new attacks from the enemy troops and Nazgul while working to complete the objectives specified at the beginning of the game. Once these objectives are complete, they must make sure the player with Frodo has enough ring cards, get Sam and Frodo to Mount Doom, and destroy the One Ring to win.
Should I Buy This Game?
Between how anticipated this game was, the high ratings, and the fact that it’s currently sold out on the Asmodee site, there’s a greater than zero chance that you already own this game. If not, do you like Lord of the Rings? Do you enjoy playing Pandemic? If you answered yes to one of those questions, then you should probably get a copy of this game once it’s available again. The tone of a Pandemic-style game works so well with a LoTR adventure. And there is even a little Barad-dur to set up as part of your game board. Because the Eye of Sauron is always watching.
