A new update showcases some of the mechanics from the upcoming The Ghost in the Shell tabletop RPG from Mantic Games.

A hot new update from Mantic Games’ upcoming The Ghost in the Shell tabletop RPG shows off what the mechanics are like. So if you’ve been wondering how your Section 9 Trainee is going to get out there and mix it up in the dangerous streets of New Port City, now’s your chance to find out. Come take a look at the mechanics of The Ghost in the Shell.

Ghost in the Shell RPG Mechanics Unveiled

The last time we got a look under the shell, so to speak, of the mechanics, we saw a very broad glimpse of character creation. Trainees assign dice values (d4, d6, d8, etc.) to six stats broken up into three broad categories, Ghost, Shell, and Hacking. Each stat starts to build your dice pool along with relevant skills, gear, and so on.

In the video we get a taste of the mechanics at play. Of particular interest to me was the way the Synthesis Conflict gets integrated into the game. This is the core “internal conflict” that pulls your character from one side to another over the course of the game.

Personally, I love to see stuff like this represented mechanically. You see it in games like Avatar: the Last Airbender as well, where your character is mechanically incentivized to act a certain way, and at times, their life is made complicated because of the decisions you make in character creation.

And ultimately, I think that’s what we want out of an RPG. To know our decisions matter. Whether this is something like “I fight with a sword” vs. “I cast a fireball” to “I decided to be good at reading people instead of fighting.”

The Ghost in the Shell tabletop RPG will deliver this in spades. And there are miniatures as well. As the game prepares for launch on BackerKit later this month, you can be sure that there will be more, including a soon to premiere actual play of the game so you can see it in action.
