Daggerheart has opened up a new class for playtest. Check out the new Summoner Class and accompanying new Blood Domain.

It’s time for a new Daggerheart Playtest. Not only did we get a new Daggerheart AP kickoff last night (Age of Umbra: Sallowlands), we also got a whole new class and bloody new domain to play with. Right now at Daggerheart’s Void, the source for all playtest stuff, you can find the Summoner. As the name suggests, this new class is all about summoning creatures to fight for you, but it does a good deal more. Let’s check it out.

Daggerheart’s Summoner Playtest – Available Now

The Summoner Class for Daggerheart is pretty much what you’d expect out of a Spellcasting class. It comes with a base 10 Evasion, uses the Knowledge stat as the primary Spellcasting trait, and is, in general a little squishy. At least as squishy as any character is.

As far as what they actually do, there are three big things that you’ll be doing. The first is that you can spend your Hope to share Hope with your allies (as well as clearing a Stress for yourself). Not a bad feature.

You’ll also be using the Splendor and Blood Domains. You can check out the Blood Domain at the playtest, linked below. But in a nutshell, it’s blood magic. You can shoot blood spikes and grisly harpoons at people, but you can also take control of them via their own blood or creating magical parasites. Or heal your friends, if they don’t mind a little bit of the gruesomeness.

But as you might expect, the big feature of the Summoner Class is the ability to Summon Otherworldly Entities. This is your core Class Feature, and lets you mark a Stress to conjure a number of entities equal to your Tier (1-4). Every Summoner can summon a Fate Spirit, and you can pick between summoning undead or angels with your choice of subclass. That’s Necromancy and Theurgy, respectively.

What these Entities can do varies as you level up. At the base level, Fate Spirits can make a target reroll a successful attack and then disappear. Your more advanced entities do more things. For instance, a Necromancer’s Shambling Corpses allow you to deal damage from afar, while a Theurgist’s Archangels can fly you around, or attack your enemies, or even help your allies before disappearing.

They don’t really stick around. This isn’t the “pet class” that I think a lot of folks are hoping it would be. It’s more like your summoned creatures are an aura that you then decide to spend as you see fit, because some will grant a passive effect while summoned. But, love it or hate it, this is your chance to shape the Summoner. Take it for a playtest, then come back and fill out the playtest survey on July 23rd!
