Exciting news for the Ghost in the Shell RPG. A new video on the BackerKit page takes you inside Character Creation. Now you can see what goes into the making of a Section 9 trainee along with game designer Alessio Cavatore. But there’s more than just a video today; let’s check it out.

Ghost In The Shell RPG Character Creation

If this is the first you’re hearing of it, the Ghost in the Shell RPG from Mantic is getting ready to launch on BackerKit this month. It’s based on the world of the manga, specifically, where you play as new agents in Section 9. It is an “authentic, deeply faithful tabletop adaptation.” So get ready to get real nerdy about it.

On to the character creation system for the Ghost in the Shell RPG. There are six traits divided into three categories, dealing with your inner world or soul, your physical body, and of course, your cybernetics. Or: Ghost, Shell, and Cyberbrain. You assign them a die value, and in the video you can either have a d6 in each, or raise one to a d8 and lower one to a d4.

Much more interesting is the idea of the Synthesis Conflict. You pick two different aspects that represent your internal conflict. It might be something like where is the line between man and machine. Or belonging vs. solitude, or duty vs. family, or hope vs. cynicism (which leapt out to me). You get to decide what these elements are and they will pull your character in different directions.

You pick some skills to define your character and their specialty in Section 9. There’s a broad list of skills that will highlight your strengths. And then you’ll need a weakness. Some area to help motivate roleplaying, which could be something like “is a loner” or “has an enemy.” Setbacks give you more character creation tools to play with, so it’s not all bad.

Naturally, there are cybernetic upgrades, every character has at least one. And then Ghost Whispers, a concept highlighted in the later volumes of the manga; these are a currency that let you manipulate the game with rerolls or other changes.

But you can check all this out for yourself by following the BackerKit campaign at the link below. When you do, you can get the free Character Creation Kit right now and start planning your Section 9 Trainee.
