Playing a Bladesinger? That can be a ton of fun, but you’ll want to make sure to kit yourself out with the right magic items.

Bladesinger Wizards are a popular subclass these days. It’s not hard to see why. They’re Wizards that also do Swords. And it’s got shades of ‘Being an Elf’ baked into it, even if you’re not playing an elf. Who wouldn’t want that?

So, when you’re rolling up your new Wizard and dreaming about how they’ll one day become a great Bladesinger, consider the following magic items, which will doubtless prove essential.

Moonblade

If you’re gonna be a Bladesinger, you may as well go all the way. Just as “bladesong” is an ancient elven magic, so too are Moonblades ancient elven magic swords. These aren’t artifacts. Not exactly. But they come close.

Each one comes with a +1 to +3 bonus. As well as other properties. You might end up with extra force damage, or having an increased critical threat range.

Bracers of Defense

Of course, if you’re going to be a Bladesinger, you have to understand two things: look cool, and don’t wear armor. Now, that’s not bad, when you get to add your Intelligence as a bonus to your AC during Bladesong, and you can use things like the Mage Armor to raise it even higher. That’s where the Bracers of Defense come in. These are a flat +2 to your AC, which makes your AC even higher, in some cases, levels ahead of where it would be with your stat progression.

Wand of Magic Missiles

Sure, you’re a Bladesinger. And having swords and doing spells is your thing. But most people see a Bladesinger and think, “that’s a Sword Wizard, doing Wizard Sword things.” Not you though. Not with the humble Wand of Magic Missile, which a) doesn’t require attunement, and b) lets you cast up to a level 3 Magic Missile as a single Magic Action. You’ll always have something to do with one of these as your “sidearm.”

Ioun Stone of Absorption

You might be running a little low on Attunement slots. But a big part of a Bladesinger’s whole deal is they use magic to defend themselves from all kinds of assault. An Ioun stone of Absorption can cancel out up to four levels of a spell at a time. Which can provide you all sorts of protection beyond just your magically enhanced AC.

Enspelled Weapon

Can’t get your hands on a Moonblade? It doesn’t actually matter. Because one of the coolest magic items for a Bladesinger is an Enspelled Weapon. It’s basically a magic sword that has extra magic in it. Each of these weapons, when created, comes with 6 charges. A single charge can be spent to cast whatever spell is in your weapon, whether that’s Fireball, Lightning Bolt, or whatever was put in the weapon when it was created. That’s six extra spell slots, which is huge for anyone, but especially a Wizard all about swords.

What are your favorite Bladesinger items?
