Purr Evil #1

Rita loves her daughter Deb, but a dark evil from her past threatens the lives of anyone who gets too close to it. Can the bond between two women overcome a life built on blood and lies? And what secret is lurking in the Morando family’s apartment? Purr Evil #1 has a lot going on in the debut issue with aspects rather interesting but almost too much thrown at the reader.

Where to even begin with Purr Evil #1. The comic bounces around from a widower and his son to a mysterious woman and a daughter with a band thrown in and then a bonkers ending.

Written by Mirka Andolfo, Purr Evil #1 is hard to explain and when you think you have an idea as to what it’s about, it veers into a direction that’s unexpected and at times feels like it’s out of left field. There’s teases of a band, murder, magic, and a love story, and it all comes together for one of the weirder debuts of the year.

With art by Laura Braga, the comic has a pop sense about it, and yes, that includes a subplot involving a band. Giovanni Manca helps with ink and background assistant while Bryan Valenza handles color and Fabio Amelia is the letterer. The art has a magical, pop, sense about it with the character designs and the coloring. Those visuals hide the weirdness underneath that is slowly revealed throughout the issue.

Purr Evil #1 is an interesting issue. By its end, I had guesses as to what was happening but still unsure of exactly what. There’s a lot thrown at the reader and at times it almost feels like it’s too much. How it all comes together will be interesting but there’s some potential, it’s just hard to guess exactly what to expect going forward. And, maybe that’s the fun of it all?
