Space 1889: After (the latest edition) is about to launch a new campaign for an adventure anthology and swanky core rulebook printing.

Steampunk is a resilient idea. It never truly dies; it just lies dormant in the mind, not sleeping, not dreaming, but rather waiting. Waiting for the mind to slip and think ‘oh hey, some brass fittings could be cool’ or ‘maybe a nice brown leather would look good on me’ and then it reemerges, ready, willing, and able. And as you might well imagine, steampunk fits right in with most tabletop RPG players.

Case in point, Space 1889, and its latest edition, Space 1889: After which came out three or so years ago, is back. Strange Owl Games has a new crowdfunding project in the works, set to go live next week, which will launch a new adventure anthology for the popular steampunk setting, as well as a “premium, high-quality offset” print run of the core rulebook.

Space 1889: After – Anthology And High-Quality Core Book Coming Soon

If you’ve never played Space 1889, it’s a wild ride. Drawing inspiration from the ideas and aesthetics of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, and Victorian literature in general, you can basically think of this as Victorian era Sci-Fi.

The premise is simple. In the late 1800s, humanity heads out into space with brave ethernauts donning protective suits to venture out into the Great Dark where adventure and intrigue awaits. It’s the kind of setting where science is pronounced with a capital S and an exclamation point. And Science! takes the place of magic on this rpg.

So, on to the upcoming campaign. The two big things are the adventure anthology and a new printing of the core rulebook:

“This adventure anthology collects four harrowing tales of discovery and danger that define the new era of Space 1889: After with the possibility of unlocking more through stretch goals. From the sun-scorched, signal-jammed wastes of Mercury to the ancient, machine-haunted husks of the Asteroid Belt, these missions will test the limits of your Crew’s ingenuity and the hull-plating of your ether-flier. Chosen tiers will include a hard bound, offprint collection of all the adventures.

We’ve completed the writing, the rules are polished, and the art is finished. Now, we are returning for one primary mission: Quality.”

And, if you’re thinking that all sounds cool but are worried about getting your friends into a whole new game, don’t be. Space 1889: After is available for 5E as well, with converted rules for ether-fliers, sky galleons, and aerial gunboats are compatible with any space-faring 5th edition game, and the Space 1889: After setting itself is a potential destination for any spell mishap or astral plane excursion.

Look for the BackerKit Campaign to launch next week.
