Evil Hat’s ambitious new FATE Sourcebook, Umdaar: Planet of Swords, Super Science, and Sorcery, is available now on Drivethrurpg in a pay-what-you-want “Rebel Broadcast Edition.” What makes it a “Rebel Broadcast”? Two things, it turns out.
For one, it’s a digital supplement that has the full rules – but with few bells and whistles. This is because of the second reason, in part, which is that the scope of the Umdaar book has become extraordinarily ambitious, as the creators put it.
“Please note that after years of development, the ambitious vision we had for this game outstripped our production budget. Given the funds Evil Hat has already invested, we couldn’t see a path to profitability under a standard commercial release. But we don’t want all the incredible work that went into Umdaar to go to waste. So we’ve pulled back on our plans to commission the prodigious amount of art a 450+ page book would require and decided to release this Rebel Broadcast Edition of Umdaar on a Pay What You Want basis. While Umdaar is unlikely to see a full print release, if there is sufficient interest—and your download of the game is certainly a sign of that!—we may create a print-on-demand (POD) offering after we’ve collected and corrected those pesky typos. Umdaar: Rebel Broadcast Edition Available Now
In a nutshell, Umdaar is a build-your-own Eternia kind of game. You get to create your own version of one of those sci-fantasy cartoons in a surprisingly chunky book. The final product weighs in at something like 460 pages and is full of crunchy rules to create your new Champion.
It promises all the swords and lasers glory of shows like He-Man and She-Ra. Or Krull, if you think about it a little bit. Basically, super science, swords, and sorcery all come crashing together as Champions clash in vibrant, full-color glory.
