A new Call of Cthulhu adventure from the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society promises to bring the dread of Cthulhu to the Oregon coast.

Call of Cthulhu is getting a rollicking new adventure set in 1925, brought to you from the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. You might know them for their award-winning “prop sets,” which are sets of handouts, trinkets, and other ephemera to help realize the horrors of Cthulhu at your very tabletop. Or from any of the other things the Society does. But this week, Chaosium announced that the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society was back at it with a whole new adventure, Eternity at Sea.

This “proptastic” adventure heads for the opposite side of the country. Journeying from the bleak horrors of the New England coast to the stormy seas off the Oregon Coast in a deluxe boxed set that’s sure to make for a memorable adventure.

‘Eternity At Sea’ A New Call Of Cthulhu Adventure

If you’re wondering about the focus on props, you have to understand that’s one of the first ways Call of Cthulhu stood out. The original Masks of Nyarlathotep, one of the legends of original campaigns, was so popular in part because the campaign set came with a bunch of handouts to give to players to immerse them in the game. People have been hyped for this kind of thing since the earliest days of gaming.

But on top of that, Eternity at Sea brings a twisting mystery for Investigators to get lost in. And it introduces a new setting, the Pacific Northwest. It all starts with a death in the family…

“Following a death in the family the Investigators are summoned to the old family farm outside of Astoria, Oregon. The circumstances of the death turn out to be strange and the terms of the deceased’s will are stranger still. Can family members with diverse agendas work together to uncover a bizarre chapter of their family’s history, or will they be destroyed by otherworldly horrors hell-bent on collecting on an old debt?

Eternity at Sea is an original adventure produced under license by [the] H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, winners of multiple awards for their Call of Cthulhu creations. Sean Branney has written the scenario and Andrew Leman has created a fantastic set of props to go with it.”

The adventure bills itself as making use of the real history and locations of the Oregon coast. Because authenticity is how you ground the horror of a Call of Cthulhu adventure in the real world. Make it feel familiar (or at least specific) enough and your brain relaxes enough so you can feel unsettled and completely on guard against (imagined) horror. Yeah, it’s a little ironic, but it’s also what we love about good horror RPGs.

And it’s not just some letters that you get. You’ll find a 3D model kit, voice recordings from professional actors, and even a bonus prop if you pre-order by July 1st. This deluxe boxed set is a hefty two whole pounds. Eternity at Sea is available for pre-order now, but you can expect the full release on July 15th.

An Eternity at Sea doesn’t sound too bad as long as it’s on the sea and not in it!
