The Adeptus Mechanicus are getting a new Eye of Terror: Battalion box and this one’s kind of a weird one for Warhammer 40,000.
Games Workshop announced a trio of Battalion boxes and they are each kind of funky. Well, at least in terms of what’s in the box vs price points. I don’t think that these Battalions are going to be priced the same across the board. That’s not a bad thing. But it does make it a little hard to compare. At least we can do some math and work backwards from there. So let’s get into it!
Eye of Terror: Adeptus Mechanicus Battalion Breakdown

Total Individual MSRP $233
This is another one of those cases where we don’t have a final box price. That said, if we slap a 30% discount on these boxed sets we get discounted price of $163.10. That means we’re likely to see this one closer to a Combat Patrol price of $170 if I had to guess. With that price in mind, I think we can at least check the math and say this one has an estimated savings of $63.
Is that confirmed? No. But it should be in that ballpark. If this Ad Mech box ends up being cheaper, then it’s an even better deal. And if the price is way over $170, well, you can at least do the math with the MSRP to figure out if this one is worth it for you.
Eye of Terror: Adeptus Mechanicus Battalion Worth It?
Depending on the price I think this one might be worth picking up. And it might even be worth picking up a pair of them! Why? That’s going to depend on the Ad Mech army you want to run. However what this box has going for it at a base line is that both the Ironstrider Ballistarius and Skorpius Dunerider have alternate build options. Now, to be clear, that doesn’t make this box good on by itself. I’d even argue that if you really wanted to get value out of the Ironstrider Ballistarius/Sydonian Dragoon you’d need like …6 of them in a list. But that’s what makes this box both interesting and complicated to explain.
You could make a case that the same is true for the Skorpius. But because it can be fielded as either fire support tank (the Disintegrator) or a Troop Transport (Dunerider) then it’s really going to depend on the rest of the army you’re building. That’s why you could snag two boxes just to get the deal on those units as doubling down on them seems like the way to go. But only if you’re really wanting to go that route.
For people who just want to collect one of everything (and I know they are out there) well, there ya go. Get two and you’ll end up with a spare Onager. And having two of those to use isn’t a bad thing either.
Points-wise, if you built them as described, you’re looking at a minimum of 325. You could opt for their alternate build if you wanted to push the points up higher though. Again, I think this box is a good deal if (and only if) you’re looking to build into these specific options. It’s not a bad compliment to the Combat Patrol either as there’s no copied units. Plus having a transport to ferry around the Skitarii Vanguard isn’t a bad thing either.
Post-Battalion Next Steps
This Battalion box isn’t exactly a good way to start an Ad Mech army. However, it’s a good way to round things out. I do think that this Battalion does add a lot of firepower options to an Ad Mech collection and kind of puts the Mech (as in Mechanized, ie, mobile) into Ad Mech. Personally, if I was to start an Ad Mech army today I’d snag the Combat Patrol plus this Battalion. That seems like a nice way to get that party started.
I’d still look at some of the character options as well. I also think I’d really want to study up on the Codex for this army before I hard committed to more options. The Ad Mech can be tricky to field and have a few different builds that are viable. At least for now. There’s always the looming shadow of the next edition approaching. Oh and there’s also the other allies they can field, too. I’m thinking specifically of the Imperial Knight options. But that’s a whole other build you can go with.
The main point here is that because of the diversity in the army you really should plan out a full list if you’re serious. From crazy techno-priests in melee to scary gunline robots, to BIG GUNS, the Ad Mech has options. So save yourself some money and do some studying first!
Start with the Combat Patrol and add the Battalion. Not the otherway around.
