Games Workshop has a trio of new Battalion Boxes for Warhammer 40,000 and we’re breaking down the price and contents of the Sons of Dorn.

So first off, these new Battalion Boxes are kind of weird. I think their price points are going to be all over the place. Warhammer 40k doesn’t really have “battalion” boxes like these and they feel like a really odd experiment. We’re going to start with the Sons of Dorn which is honestly the oddest one of all. The only reason I can see GW making this boxed set in the first place is because they created a Detachment specific for the contents. Anyhow, let’s get into the box and see if we can’t figure out the price and next steps.

Black Templars upgrade frame $17.50 (1/2 the price of the Upgrade Box)

Total Individual MSRP = $403

So based on that total MSRP price, you’ve really got to wonder what the final box price will be. If you apply a 30% discount, you’re looking at around $280. But some of the other battleforce boxes have even gone up to a 35% discount which could push this in the $260 range. Honestly, I don’t know how GW is going to price this one out in the end. Whatever they end up doing, if you estimate the totals for the individual options at base price at around $400 and subtract the actual price, you’ll quickly find out what sort of deal you’re getting here.

Another wrinkle in the pricing is the Black Templar Upgrades. The WarCom article says it’s a single upgrade frame. So the full BT Upgrade set is $35. I’m assuming if there is a single upgrade frame in the box, it’s the one with the Multi-Melta. But there’s loads of little doodads all over the two frames you can apply to a vehicle. So I really don’t know what the plan is here. If you do end up with both that’s a $35 value, too. Even if this box is $300 you’re still getting a really good deal for it based on the dollar amount.

Sons of Dorn Battalion Is Good, Right?

I’m kind of mixed on this one honestly. It’s a LOT of armor. That’s not a bad thing. At the same time this box is going to really be reliant on the Ceramite Sentinels Detachment being good. But even if it IS a good Detachment, how long will that even be a legal one? The new edition is rumored to be right around the corner…

I know the Triple Repulsor Executioner meta was a thing for a hot minute. I’m not sure it still is anymore. That said, each one clocks in at 230 points. And it’s a BEEFY Main Battle Tank for the Space Marines. I know first hand that one can be quite effective so two is still going to be tough for a lot of folks to deal with.

There’s no denying that this battalion will bring a serious amount of heavy firepower. It’s also going to be a chunk of points investment at 815 points currently. That’s one way to keep your model count low! I am concerned about playing objectives game but that’s what the over ~1200 points in your list is for I suppose. This certainly feels like a boxed set you’re going to have to build around as opposed to “just slot in” to a list as well.

If you’re looing to add some serious fire support to your Space Marine Roster I’d keep an eye on this one. At the same time, keep that price point in mind. This one feels like a big commitment but if you’re looking for a particular playstyle (ie big guns and armor) this could be for you!

That is a LOT of armor…just sayin’
