Goatboy here back in the day, lots of 40K players loved to do a lot of Counts-As conversions stuff to cover unique armies.   Here are some of the best ones I remember in the days of yore.

Counts-as armies would normally involve a lot of conversions, bit swapping, and some imagination to get those armies looking awesome.  I want to go over some of the ones I liked and remember seeing back in the day.

Space Goats!

We’ll go ahead and start with the initial army that got me somewhat famous.  The Space Goats were my version of Space Wolves from back in 4th and 5th edition 40k.  I have updated them for 8th edition, but most of the time I terrorized people with giant blobs of Thunder Wolf Cavalry riding Juggernauts of doom.  I won’t go into how many metal Juggernauts I used to get this going, but I really blame a local for having way too many Beastman heads.  The original kits had a split of heads between the Gors and Ungor,s so a single box would give you a ton of extra Goatheads.

Monty Python Bretonnians

The next one I remember fondly was when I dallied into the Warhammer Fantasy game.  My local friends played it heavily, and the game had a pretty cool Warriors of Chaos line.  I wasn’t very good at it, but I remember an Aaron Chapman who had a pretty amazing Monty Python themed Bretonnian army that he played with.  I got to see it at the Dallas event named Lonestar way back in the day.  I remember that event, as I was dating my wife, who lived in Dallas, so it was nice to visit her and play some Warhammer Fantasy.

Jetbike Nob Bikerz

There was a time when the Nob Biker was a feared army.  I remember playing it during a 4th edition GW event in Baltimore, and saw a player bringing his quickly painted and converted Kroot/Ork Nob Biker army.  It had an amazing tray with these smoke clouds and a lot of neat work put into it.  He utilized the new Ork Deffkopta kit and some conversion work to create a really unique army of murder jerks that would drive around.  I remember he did pretty well at that event, as did I.  Those Nob Bikers were brutal.

Aeldari Exodites

The final army I always loved seeing during many editions was the Aledari Exodite armies.  They were converted with amazing dinosaurs and always looked good.  Those players just loved painting this army, and it showed when checking them out.  I remember a lot of events, seeing some beautiful stuff, and it always made me sad that GW hadn’t released an army update for them.  Hey, we might see it for 11th edition, so we will see.  You usually don’t see Exodites right now, as the Aspect hosts push away the idea of using Dinosaurs to ride around in.
