Ditto Pokémon cards are surging in price after Pokopia’s blockbusting Switch 2 release

I’ll be honest, before Pokémon Pokopia‘s release, the spinoff had my interest, but I wasn’t truly enamored. That all changed when I played it. Honestly, the marketing didn’t do it justice – it’s one of those games where you just want to complete one more task, before realizing (three hours later) it’s 1am and you have work in the morning. Apparently I’m not the only Pokémon TCGer to fall in love with this cozy game, either, because Ditto Pokémon cards have seen a price spike off the back of the purple goopy mess’ starring videogame role.

I honestly love Ditto. Even if it doesn’t hold a spot as one of the most expensive Pokémon cards, the adorable little and simply drawn face has mesmerized me since I first got into the games as a wee lad, and while I never kept it as a member of my main party, I was always happy to see it out in the wild. However, I’m ashamed to say I don’t own any special Ditto Pokémon TCG cards, which is a real disappointment on my side.

Sadly, it looks like my chance of owning one has gone out of the window. Following Pokémon Pokopia’s release last week, and the bolstered hype that comes from being a Switch 2 exclusive, a large chunk of Ditto cards have seen price increases. Sure, some got more drastic changes than others, but if you were keen to add the blob to your collection, you may need to pay a little extra now.

Ditto – 040/113 (Squirtle) is the clear winner right now, with the Delta Species card sitting at $245 on TCGMarketNews. For reference, that’s the reverse holofoil version, and since Pokopia’s launch, it’s gone up by $156, a massive 174% increase after a steady price for the last year. Some cards, like the Ditto – 037/113 (Charmander), have only seen a small increase – but a noticeable one after a flatlining price chart before Pokopia.

What is interesting is that it seems to be more of a ‘classic card’ situation, one that’s likely heightened by FireRed and LeafGreen’s re-launch on the Switch 2 prior to Pokopia’s release. Cards like Ditto VMAX from Shining Fates have actually declined recently, sitting around $4, while vintage singles like Ditto – 63/113 (Pikachu) continue to see small but frequent spikes.

I don’t think Ditto will suddenly become a fan favorite, but I suspect it’ll be more valuable than it was before, as many of these classic cards will never be printed again. It’s also a more natural price surge compared to the likes of the Kabuto saga late last year, which was more of an artificial move driven by one self-anointed royal collector. Ditto, by comparison, is just cool, and Pokopia has reminded everyone why it’s such a neat little ‘mon.

If you’re keen to get your hands on some classic Dittos, make sure to buy some singles at TCGPlayer – there’s no shortage of sellers looking to ship out parts of their collection, so you’ll hopefully be able to find some decent bargains, even if most people are likely going to try and make as much money off the Pokopia hype as possible. To be honest, can’t say I blame them.
