GW is showing off four new 40K Combat Patrol sets. Let’s see which ones are most worth opening up your wallet for.

I am all for new Combat Patrol options for players to grab and start there armies but these options are definitely not all equal when looking at the minis inside. Let’s break down and rank all 4 of them.  I do think a few are “must” haves for those playing those armies as they give you a way to quickly collect some of the new stuff in a nice boxed set you can find for a discount.

We’ll break down the ranking based on Cash Value, Points Value, and finally Usage Value.  This way you can look at them and decide if you want to try and preorder them when they come out or just wait and see if you can find it later at a greater discount. I do like seeing more of these options as it is just a great way to get started on a new army if you didn’t get a chance to buy the crazy battleforce boxes for some of them or other “FOMO” releases that usually come first with these new models.

Combat Patrol: Aeldari Corsairs

This is a quick release after the Corsairs boxed set that just came out.  It is cool they are going to give Aeldari players a chance to get some of the models after selling out of that new set.  In fact it really feels like a nice “smaller” purchase to let you try out those new pointy eared pirates.  They also even threw in a cool little HQ choice that might show up in armies just due to giving out a nice bubble of anti-deployment tech.

Cash Value$235 Corsairs Skyreavers are not out as a separate box but we can just utilize the Swooping Hawks cost as the value and it seems Corsairs are not on the website so will leave them at $60.00,  giving you an initial savings of 65 bucks which isn’t too bad and basically gives you a free Corsairs box.

Points Value455pts – This gives you a nice almost 25% of your army if you are planning on building an Aeldari force.  I also love that you get a transport to play with giving you a lot of options from a paint standpoint with cool troopers and a vehicle.

Usage Value – You get a transport that you would most likely need for any Aeldari army – but the infantry choices could be hit or miss for any future army.  It is so heavy in Corsair build that it has you wondering if some of the other Aeldari choices would be better to start with.  Now as an add on to an existing army this is a great buy but for anyone starting I would probably leave this for a future purchase and by the other Aeldari Combat Patrol.

Combat Patrol: Red Corsairs

It is an interesting boxed set as it gives you a unit of CSM Red Corsair Raiders, their Reave Captain, a Rhino, and some Felgors?  This is a weird one and you will see it is probably not the best one to start your army.  I do love it gives you a Rhino but the Felgors are a head scratching choice.

Cash Value $237.50 – this again is looking to save you about 65 bucks which is the Rhino for free or the Corsair Raiders.

Points Value330pts – This is a weird value when you compare it to the Aeldari Corsairs boxed set.  I think the Felgors feel out of place in this one and wonder if putting in something else like the Accursed Cultists or Traitor Guard with a Traitor Enforcer might have been better.

Usage Value – I like that you get a Rhino but this really doesn’t feel like enough to justify putting all of this together.  I think there are lot of other rabble options you could have added to make this a better boxed set for those wanting to start a Red Corsairs army.  At the very least another HQ choice could have been cool with some Traitor Guard.

Combat Patrol: Kroot

I think this is a better starting option if you want to add Kroot to your existing T’au Empire army.  You get all the pieces you need to get some Kroot working for you T’au and I think that is great. It feels super well rounded with a ton of stuff to build and paint.

Cash Value: $242 of models that show out of stock on the GW website.  This saves you more than the other combat patrols which is a cool thing.

Points Value: 290pts – Wow are these guys priced to move in the game of 40k.  This seems like a lot of stuff for very little points investment.

Usage Value – If you haven’t added Kroot to your T’au then this is a great boxed set to start adding them.  Everything is useful for a Kroot army and it gives you the pieces you can’t currently find on their website right now.  I also think all the models are a great bit to build and paint up as they all are new designs which is a great thing.

Combat Patrol: Night Lords

This is one of those boxed sets that if you want to get a lot of bits to build a Night Lords army this is a great way to start.  It gives you enough options to build them as Night Lord Legionnaires or build them as a Nemesis Claw as well.  Oh and you also get a Rhino which is cool thing with a fun HQ choice. The only thing that feels off from this is it is missing Raptors/Warp Talons boxed set.

Cash Value: $255.50 – made the extra Upgrade sprue 10 dollars but it is the biggest “savings” due to letting you take a Nemesis Claw

Points Value: 480pts – I am going to break it down into one 5-man Legionaries option and one 5-man Nemesis Claw as that is most likely the best points for this.

Usage Value: If you haven’t started your Chaos Space Marine army and want to do a Night Lords themed force (cuz they look awesome) this is an amazing boxed set to pick up.  You get a ton of value out of the boxed and the only thing that might not be used right away is the Chaos Lord with Jump Pack.  He needs some friends to ride with so you have to wait a bit to grab some Raptors/Warp Talons and get to building.  Still every single thing is really useful and you can easily buy another Chaos Lord for your Legionaries to ride with, grab a Master of Executions for your Nemesis Claw, and even look to the new Huron Boxed set to hang out with the Chosen.

Combat Patrols – The Verdict

Overall I think the value of the Kroot and Night Lord boxes are some of the best.  Almost everything is useful in each of those boxes and any new player would be happy to have them if they are going towards the army.  The Corsairs is an interesting boxed set for existing Aeldari players who didn’t grab the Corsairs boxed set with the Prince in there. The Red Corsairs box though just isn’t that good and unless you get it for a steal I would stay clear from that one.

What do you think?  Are you looking to grab any of these when they come out later this year?  Is it finally time to get that Night Lords spooky army built and working?
