Goatboy here to look at what the 40K meta will look like as 10th Edition winds down to its end.

Goatboy here thinking about 40K as usual.  Today I want to talk a bit about the meta and where I think things will shake out.  It is an interesting time to see the end of an edition.  The last time we had the end it was a much crazier time with some of the armies we had.  Let’s look at what will probably see these next few months on the competitive scene.

Mini Purchases – Stick With New Stuff

I think the first thing I will say is if you want to buy something – make sure it is a new model release.  This isn’t the time to get enamored with a long in the tooth mini for your army, based on it’s current 10th Edition rules. It isn’t time to go hog wild building some of the current Space Marine stuff nor should we go hard into some of the “firstborn” Classic Marines options we have out there.  You can expect a whole slew of new stuff and most likely a new codex for the Space Marines to shake them up a bit. If GW is making recent models for things, it’s a safe bet they will be around for a while.

C’Tan Are a Problem

I think the still current school yard bully for the 40K universe is the Necrons.  Yes they took some hits but without actively changing the C’tan core rules they are still extremely powerful.  There are a few armies that just can’t deal with one C’tan easily – let alone 3 of them.  I saw a lot of pics of players just pulling one figurine from the army of all C’tan and Silent King.  Their variance will be a bit worse with the reroll one’s missing but they will still hit hard and be a huge pain in the butt to deal with.  I really wish they would have done something with the healing wound abilities of these guys but will just have to wait and see.  The other good armies have ways to remove these guys so getting the win in the end will be hard but knocking people around on the mid tables will be a thing.

Old Calgar & Buddies Are Missing

I think the other huge thing is the fact the old Calgar and friends is no longer shown with points.  This is a crazy thing and hits UM pretty hard.  He was a cornerstone into the super friends style army we have scene and when you mix it with the other point hits it becomes a lot harder to be an Ultramarine.  I still think they should have gutted Oath for them by removing the +1 to wound they get to rock with.  I am just hoping for a quick release of a new Space Marine codex to curtail some of their detachments and extra models they don’t really need.

The Also Rans

Once those two are looked at the field gets pretty wide open with a real paper/rock/scissors style set up.  Your assault armies will hate the C’tan’s as they are normally a Damage 2 based army which any kind of reduction hurts them.  The ability for them to prey on other things just gets harder.  The really weird Adeptus Custodes Land Raider army is just a weird one that is built upon making a kinda boring unit so cheap it becomes too much to handle. Heck the old boogie man on the Chaos Daemons front from using Scintillating Legion and moving back to Daemonic Incursion is an interesting one as well.

The Twin Lance from the T’au Empire worry me as it just feels like a unit that a better player is going to wreck you with.  It also feels so bonkers to come at the end of an edition.  It has me hoping my Chaos Space Marine update that is coming will also be good.  The CSM nerf on Renegade Warband is a real pain in the butt.  I don’t think it needed both hits to the Enhancement and not being able to take cult troops.  CSM is just a weird army with a lot of potential for damage but having no ability to take the punch and keeping on going.  Will see what happens with the Multiators and the Defiler.  I get the feeling these might be better for their Cult Armies instead of just plan CSM.

The wildest army still is that I think the Recon Element Astra Militarum guard army.  It is such a horde of nonsense that just out OC’s you on objectives, has so many tricks, and is just a nightmare when played by someone who knows what they are doing.  I am just glad it is hard to play and it worries me that GW didn’t do something about the 20 man blobs being more expensive.

What To Do as 10th Winds Down?

I think for the end of the edition you should just play what you like.  It is time to practice just the basics of movement and army rules.  It sounds like the initial plan for the new Edition has the Codexes staying put,  so your army will probably be the same.  The plan of moving, controlling objectives, and completing missions will always be how the game works so even if there is a new edition any practice you do will be helpful.
