The Warhammer 40,000 Quarterly Balance Update is out. Let’s take a quick tour of what’s changed om the tabletop.

Games Workshop has released a flurry of updates today to 40k thanks to the Quarterly Balance Update. Now, I’m still going through all of these and there’s a ton of little things that have been touched on. We’ll try to hit the highlights so let’s dive in.

With fantastic new content coming from Detachments and supporting datasheets in expansions like The Maelstrom and Eye of Terror, this was an update we wanted to keep quite focused in scope. Overall, we are happy with the state of the game and are making a few targeted changes to key units that need bringing in line with their peers – or lifting up to a more suitable level – through rules adjustments or points tweaks.

Warhammer 40,000 Quarterly Balance Update

You can read the full article from WarCom about the overall changes. But I wanted to skip to the major ones first. Kicking things off we have the Necron updates:

Necrons, specifically the C’tan, have seen a resurgence with the updates that were released alongside the 500 Worlds books. C’tan Shards are barely contained vessels of godlike power that are unleashed upon the enemy with caution, not casually tossed into every skirmish by the handful, so to better represent them being powerful standalone units a number of supporting datasheet and Detachment abilities now exclude MONSTER units. This is combined with points adjustments to both their datasheets and Necrodermal Binding abilities.

This is kind of a big deal as it represents a nerf to the Necron C’tan. There might be some other units caught in the blastwave, but excluding Monsters and directly increasing the points of  C’tan, is targeted. They should be less effective on the tabletop and cost more to be there in the first place.

If you were hoping for some big news on the Chaos Daemons front, well, bad news: It’s a points increase for a few units that dodged a bump-up after last round.

Chaos Daemons received significant rules changes to both Lords of Change and Kairos Fateweaver in the last update. We have increased their points to reflect their increased output, and these changes have also been mirrored for Thousand Sons.

Chaos Space Marines Renegade Warbands now also restrict access to the Cults of the Dark Gods. This is to better represent these Renegades recent turn to chaos.

Many, Many Points Updates

If you’re playing one of the following armies you should certainly pop over to the points and double check your army.

Adeptus Custodes

  • Aeldari
  • Astra Militarum (specifically the Rogal Dorn)
  • Black Templars
  • Blood Angels
  • Death Guard
  • Drukhari
  • Emperor’s Children
  • Grey Knights
  • Imperial Knights
  • Imperial Agents (specifically as Allies)
  • Space Marines
  • World Eaters

As of posting I’m only seeing the following recently updated faction packs as well:

All that to say if you’re looking to play 40k anytime soon you should still take a moment to check your own army out at the minimum. Their might be a points adjustment and there might even be a nice boost in the Balance Dataslate for your army.

I’m still digesting these changes. Did you find anything crazy in the Balance Update this time around?
