Atomic Mass Games is developing new ‘Full Scale War’ rules for Star Wars Legion, which will allow players to field colossal forces of at least 2,000 points, reviving the Grand Army play mode from first edition. VP for Creative Development and Strategy Will Shick revealed the upcoming game format on Thursday, during a live AMA in the Wargamer Discord server and says that players will be able to test an early access version of the rules at Adepticon in 2026.
Typical games of Star Wars Legion have already grown a little with the shift from 800 point games in first edition to 1,000 points in second, but the rules for playing games with a double-sized Grand Army didn’t make the leap from one edition to the next. Admittedly, the Grand Army rules were just a single paragraph long, so they weren’t hard to proxy – but Shick says the version of Full Scale War you can play at Adepticon will be the “Alpha or Beta” version of the rules, suggesting it’s going to be considerably more substantial.
The team might be working on a full alternative play mode that provides extra tools designed to keep big games running smoothly, similar to how Special Operations adapts Legion into a low model-count skirmish game, and Tours of Duty sockets the core rules into a narrative campaign system with rules for army development. That’s just speculation on my part – AMG might simply be working really hard to get that single paragraph of rules just right.
If you missed the AMA with Will Shick and game development director Will Pagani, worry not – it’ll be going up on the Wargamer YouTube channel as soon as possible. The duo covered all kinds of things – indulging audience speculation about the Star Wars Legion roadmap, talking about the realities of game design, sharing recipes for smoked brisket… To ensure you don’t miss future AMAs with Will and Will (and other game designers), and hang out with a very funky bunch of folks, join the Wargamer Discord community today.
