Star Wars Legion’s lead designers delve into the Galactic Empire starter set

With a fresh range of starter sets launching for Star Wars Legion this summer and fall, we asked Will Shick, the Creative and Development VP at Atomic Mass Games (AMG), and Will Pagani, Game Development Director, to find out what each of the packs offer to new players. Today, lets examine what the Galactic Empire starter set has to offer:

The Star Wars Legion starter sets will all retail for $95, and come with all the models, tokens, dice, and cards needed to field a 600 point ‘Recon’ starter army – the Galactic Empire starter is commanded by Darth Vader, leading a force of 22 Storm Troopers and 14 Scout Troopers. Though the release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s on the Star Wars Legion roadmap for a fall release this year.

Wargamer: What does the Galactic Empire starter set specialise in?

AMG: The Galactic Empire set focuses on consistency and discipline. Stormtroopers may not be the single most powerful unit but if they can take up a position and aim before shooting, they’ll utilize their Precise keyword to increase the consistency of their dice significantly. Darth Vader and the Scout Troopers moving forward to hold down objectives and pressure your opponent should get your Stormtroopers the room they need to get into position.

What does Darth Vader do for his force?

Darth Vader is one of the most powerful single characters in the game – be it his prowess in close combat or his master of the various force powers available to him, he’s easily the strongest character in all of the starter sets. He’s the focal point of this starter set.

How do the basic Corps infantry in this box stand out from the other sets?

Stormtroopers are very durable compared to many of the other options – they’re fewer points than Clone troopers but share the same tough durability stats. Look out for their lower courage when they’re not around their commanders though!

What’s this starter set’s big weakness?

The set puts a lot of the focus on Darth Vader being a powerful close combat piece – if he gets slowed down or prevented from leveraging this advantage your game plan can go downhill very quickly! Not to mention, your lower unit count and slower units can make scoring Victory Points more difficult than in some of the other starter sets.

What’s a good way to expand from this set to make a more rounded list?

Many people choose to add Dewback Riders alongside Darth Vader as they synergize very well. Another unit or two of Storm Troopers can give you an excellent back bone to work from. Nothing beats the AT-ST for iconic looks and long range firepower!

If you want to double down on the starter set’s strengths, what do you need?

Filling out your Corp options with more Stormtroopers and Snowtroopers gives you a durable, aggressive force that can march up the field alongside Darth Vader while laying down covering fire. Snowtroopers specifically help the box in its ability to contest and secure objectives while applying pressure to your opponent with their Steady keyword – giving them the ability to shoot as a free action after moving!

Both Wills have answered more questions about the other upcoming starter sets, which you can expect to see on Wargamer soon! Excited for the new set? Got plans for your own army? Come and join us in the official Wargamer Discord community and share your plans!
