MTG Commander sets
From 2011 to 2019, Wizards of the Coast released Commander decks and other products just once per year. Since May 15 2020, the firm has released batches of MTG Commander precons parallel to new mainline Magic sets. Although they share the set’s theme and narrative, they have their own set code and set symbol.
Starting with Theros: Beyond Death in January 2020, Wizards started publishing from these Commander sets in the main set’s Collector or Set boosters. To make things more confusing, some cards in certain Commander sets could only be found in the (non-draftable) boosters for the main set, and not in the accompanying precons.
As of May 2025 there have been two draftable Commander sets sold in booster packs, Battle for Baldur’s Gate and Commander Masters. Both of these sets came with Commander precons, but the draft cards and the precons all shared the same set code and set symbol.
The Dr Who and Fallout Universes Beyond Commander sets also had Collector Boosters. These contained alternate art treatment versions of cards found in the precons.

Magic: The Gathering sets FAQ
Above are all the sets, right back to the very beginnings of Magic: The Gathering, but if you’re new to the game, some more info might be in order. Here’s the lowdown on how these releases work.
What are MTG sets?
Most Magic: The Gathering sets aren’t individual boxed products on a shelf, like Lego sets or Warhammer 40k box sets. Instead, an MTG set is a distinct, named new collection of MTG cards released and added to the game’s existing pool of playable cards.
Depending on the type, each set will normally have its own theme, either based around a particular fictional setting in the lore, or perhaps tailored to one particular mode of play, like Commander or Modern (these are called MTG formats).
What are the types of MTG sets?
We’ve created several categories to make our list of every MTG set easier to peruse. Here’s what those terms mean:
- Expansion: These are the regular Magic: The Gathering sets, legal in Standard, and released at regular intervals throughout the year.
- Compilation: These are reprint sets with no new cards. Often these contain a compilation of cards set on the same MTG plane.
- Un-set: These are joke sets with cards that have weird, wacky effects. Cards from these sets usually have silver borders and are not been legal in other formats.
- Universes Beyond set: One of Magic: The Gathering’s many crossover sets. Now that MTG Universes Beyond sets are Standard-legal, this category has merged with regular expansions somewhat.
- Core set: Beginner-friendly sets that are Standard legal – these have been canceled and reintroduced several times.
- Box set: Sets with a predetermined batch of cards, where what you get is not randomized.
- Supplemental set: A catch-all category for MTG sets that don’t fall into one of the above categories. These include many of WotC’s experiments over the years, as well as expansions built for specific formats other than Standard.
When do new MTG sets come out on MTG Arena?
Currently, every new Standard set releases on MTG Arena a few days before the physical products are available in stores.
Most new Standard sets also herald an Alchemy release of about 25-30 Arena-only cards that are not produced in physical form. These cards are specially designed to work best in the digital format. They often include mechanics that would be impractical in regular Magic, such as summoning random creatures from your deck, creating new cards, or permanently altering others.
Are Universes Beyond sets also released on MTG Arena?
As of June 2025, only one of Wizards of the Coast’s Universes Beyond crossover sets has been released in digital form on MTG Arena: the mighty, best-selling 2023 MTG Lord of the Rings set. This is partly because initially these sets were considered a somewhat separate entity from mainline Magic: The Gathering. Most were Commander products, so there was no reason to include them on MTG Arena.
However, now that Universes Beyond sets are Standard-legal, and have even lost the distinctive card borders that separated them from regular cards, Universes Beyond sets are going to be released on MTG Arena (and MTG Online) from now on, starting with Final Fantasy.
Not every UB set is making a smooth transition to digital platforms, however. On April 21, 2025, Wizards announced ‘Through the Omenpaths’ sets, Magic versions of non-Magic Magic sets (confused yet?) Presumably due to a wrinkle in the licensing deal with Marvel, Wizards is creating reskinned in-universe versions of all Marvel Spiderman cards for its online platforms.
This is the form in which these cards will make it to MTG Arena and MTG Online. All Marvel sets going forward are going to receive this treatment.
How many cards are in each MTG set?
Each new MTG set normally contains somewhere between 200 and 300 cards. The selection almost always includes a mixture of brand new cards (where the card name, in-game rules, and art are all new) and ‘reprints’ (new versions of existing popular cards, which keep the same name and rules, but may feature new artwork and sometimes updated wording).
What is the biggest MTG set ever released?
The biggest single MTG set ever released was the Fifth Edition core set in 1997, which had 449 new cards in total, including 20 Basic Lands.
Other massive sets from the early era of Magic include its immediate predecessor, 1995’s Fourth Edition core set, with 363 cards; 1996’s Mirage, with 350, and 1997’s Tempest, which also added 350 cards to the game.
Sets started becoming smaller during the aughts, although 2007’s Lorwyn bucked the trend with a mighty 301 cards.
What is the smallest MTG set ever released?
The smallest MTG set of all time, by total number of cards, is technically 2023’s March of the Machine: Aftermath, with just 50 new cards. But, if we discount that as merely a mini addon to the 291-card March of the Machine, the smallest legitimate set is Arabian Nights, the very first ‘expansion’ set, released in December 1993 with just 92 cards.
Oh, you meant the actual smallest cards? That honor is held by the Worlds Smallest Magic: The Gathering Exclusive Collector Set pictured above – a painfully adorable, now sadly discontinued joke product that included two itsy-bitsy duel decks composed of downsized, 1.2 x 1.8 inch cards, as well as teeny weeny spindown dice.
How many MTG sets are released each year?
Currently, Wizards of the Coast releases around ten MTG sets per year. We get four full ‘Standard’ sets annually (about one every three months) and between four and eight smaller sets – usually focused on specific formats, or revisiting a popular past setting with additional cards.
In addition, Wizards releases what it calls ‘MTG Secret Lair drops’, which are much smaller, limited edition print runs of specially designed cards aimed at collectors – often themed around franchises, fandoms, or art styles outside of Magic.
What products come with each MTG set?
Every time a new MTG set is released, Wizards of the Coast produces a range of different products containing the new cards, in different configurations, for various types of players.
Currently, every main MTG set releases with:
- Play boosters – packs of 14 random cards including at least one Rare or Mythic Rare.
- Collector boosters – packs of 15 random cards including 4-5 guaranteed Rares and Mythic Rares, plus special art cards.
- Bundles – a mixed box containing 9 play boosters, 30 land cards, and accessories like tokens and counters.
- Commander decks – pre-built 100-card decks for the Commander (EDH) game format. Each set normally has at least four of these, also called Commander precons.
- Prerelease pack – A box sold at prerelease events, with six Play boosters, one promo card (a foil Rare or Mythic Rare stamped with the year), a deck box, MTG Arena code, and spindown die with the set symbol.
