Employees at Abrams Books, including division Abrams ComicArts (see “ComicArts to Go from Imprint to Division”), have voted to unionize, the union announced. The new union will be part of UAW Local 2110. The mail-in vote, which ran April 30 to May 21, yielded an 88% win for the union. Leading up to the unionization drive, Abrams employees had been subject to multiple rounds of layoffs and health benefit cuts.
Abrams is not the first New York book publisher to be unionized. Workers at HarperCollins, also part of UAW Local 2110, went on strike in November 2022; the strike was finally settled some three months later, in February 2023 (see “HarperCollins, Union Reach Agreement”).
Abrams recently expanded into manga with Kana, a new imprint (see “New Abrams Manga Imprint”).
