New ‘Star Wars’ Graphic Novels, Art Book in the Works

Lucasfilm announced four new Star Wars projects at the Manga Mania panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025.

Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber, by Kenny Ruiz, is a new series to be published by VIZ Media that focuses on the Jedi Knights’ famous weapon.  The first volume introduces a young tinkerer and dreamer, Nioka, who finds a lightsaber by accident and must learn to master it and keep it away from the Empire.  Ruiz, who is Spanish, is also the creator of Team Phoenix (see “Udon Licenses Tezuka-Inspired Space Opera“).  Vol. 1 of Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber will be published on November 11, 2025, with an MSRP of $14.99.

Dark Horse Comics will publish The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga, a two-volume set spotlighting Hisao Tamaki’s original art from the 1997 manga adaptation of the first Star Wars film, with a Kickstarter followed by a retail edition.  The two Kickstarter-exclusive editions will be the Collector’s Edition, a two-volume hardcover set, and the Masterpiece Edition, a large-format edition reproducing the art at its original size in two 176-page hardcover volumes with a 104-page additional volume.  A standard edition will be released in 2026.  All feature a new translation.

Two adaptations were also announced at the panel:  An adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s 2017 novel Star Wars: Thrawn, by writer and artist Man Tsang, and a graphic novel based on the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, by Mangado.  More information will be released on these in the future.
