Close look at the beautiful art of the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Journey Together expansion

The Pokémon Company recently released a new Pokémon TCG expansion called Journey Together. Read on below to learn more:

Peruse a selection of stunning artwork to be discovered in the latest Pokémon TCG expansion.

Adventures are much better with a friend, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game: Scarlet & Violet—Journey Together expansion highlights exactly why. From epic swings in battle to the serene stops along the way, having a friend at your side makes all these moments even more worthwhile, as we can see in each lustrous illustration in the expansion.

There are plenty of showstopping art pieces to admire—let’s set off and explore the astounding works that you might cross paths with.

Our first stop takes us to an arid desert, where Escavalier uses its lances to fend off an unseen foe in this captivating illustration by Takumi Wada. You may recognize Mr. Wada’s work if you’re familiar with The Legend of Zelda franchise—Mr. Wada illustrated the title screen image from Breath of the Wild.

Mr. Wada’s expert brushstrokes help us visualize sand kicked up in the wind, where in contrast, the shadow cast by the Cavalry Pokémon’s lance draws our attention to its defensive stance, focused and waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

In this expansion, you may come across the Pokémon partners of certain iconic Trainers, including the adorable Lillie’s Cutiefly (illus. Saya Tsuruta), Hop’s Wooloo (illus. MINAMINAMI Take) looking extra fluffy, and N’s Purrloin (illus. Keisin), regal as ever. Cutiefly is showing off the importance of stopping and admiring the flowers, surrounded by dreamlike floaty flecks of light. Hop and Wooloo are enjoying a contemplative rest together on a delicately painted hilltop, overlooking Hop’s quaint hometown, Postwick. Elsewhere, N’s Purrloin is looking all too satisfied with itself, perhaps after landing a few critical slashes to a challenging Pokémon (or a Trainer’s ego).

Each of these Trainer’s Pokémon emphasize the importance of companionship on an adventure, and of taking a rest to reflect on how our journey has progressed.

Bright, eye-catching colors aren’t only for action-packed moments; they can also be used to capture picturesque, awe-inspiring scenery, like our friend Wailord (illus. Katsunori Sato) peeking out from the waves to say hello. Its mouth is reminiscent of the tip of an iceberg, and beneath the water, a vibrant coral reef awaits. Playfully blending into its colorful surroundings is the Color Swap Pokémon, Kecleon, (illus. 0313) who fits seamlessly into its papercraft-like surroundings.

Of course, we can’t mention flashy colors without covering the electrifying Iono’s Voltorb (illus. Kazumasa Yasukuni). It appears like it was jolted into action, with eye-catching lightning bolts mixed with bubbly pink flourishes that further emphasize Iono’s influence on this Pokémon with her zappy personality.

Turning our eyes to nature opens the way for countless new discoveries, whether we’re searching up the name of a unique-looking plant or uncovering what Pokémon are lurking about. The Jet Pokémon Remoraid (illus. Minahamu) takes a moment to spritz a passerby with a stream of water, and the angle of the art shows us a peek into the clear waters. Toedscruel (illus. Masako Tomii) appears to be meandering along a serenely colored secret forest path—perhaps the same one its Ability is referring to. Cubone (illus. Mugi Hamada) has a moment of relaxation amid a dense valley of foliage, breathing in a healthy dose of sunlight with clear skies above.

Rest and relaxation are great, sure, but far more rewarding when it comes after a hard-won battle in the field. Foliage becomes foe under the deft wielding of Floragato (illus. Felicia Chen), whose art gives a high-angle view of the flower bud’s movement away from its paws and toward its challenger. A view from the ground puts us right beside the action—like Combusken (illus. Fujimoto Gold) storming across the plains, blades of grass flying out in all directions.

Pokémon battles are so exciting, even the usually sleepy Hop’s Snorlax (illus. GOSSAN) woke up for a taste! It slams down a mighty move in a battle at , where its Extra Helpings Ability may help it turn the tide of battle.

The art explored here is only the beginning—there is so much more to be uncovered in your own journey through the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Journey Together expansion. Venture through each pack and take note of all your own favorite pieces. You might discover something new to love!
