Transformers #19 puts the spotlight on Megatron

Transformers #19

What’s up with Megatron? The new Transformers series has teased Megatron’s adventures which have taken place behind the scenes. He was captured by Cobra-La, escaped, and eventually made his way to his feuding Decepticons, worse for wear. Transformers #19 delivers a one-shot focused on the mighty Decepticon and some of his rise to being the leader of the group.

Written by Daniel Warren Johnson, Transformers #19 answers few of our questions. Instead, it tells the tail of a abducted Megatron who is forged through battle by mysterious forces for mysterious reasons.

Johnson presents a familiar story, an almost Sisyphean tale of Megatron battling over and over until he gains in power, and learns control. It’s an interesting story that gives some teases as to the motivation behind Megatron, and the Decepticon’s, battle against the Autobots.

Transformers #19 teases things. A lot of things. There’s a “dark” version of the Matrix. The Quintessons seem to have manipulated Megatron and the Decepticons into their battle with the Autobots for some reason. With what’s being revealed in the comic series Void Rivals, it’s clear there’s a big picture that’s slowly coming together when it comes to the Quintessons and their role in… everything.

The art by Ludo Lullabi is good. With color by Adriano Lucas and lettering by Rus Wooton the style mimics what has come before but has it’s own feel. The art does a solid job of really nailing down a visual look that matches the torture Megatron is enduring, it has an almost nightmare like quality about it.

While Transformers #19 doesn’t answer why Megatron was separated in the beginning of the comic, we do get a sense of motivation of the war that has been happening and a lot teased for what’s to come. Transformers #19 isn’t the strongest issue on its own, but as a part of the puzzle, it feels like it’s a key piece.
