The iconic G.I. Joe ninja Jinx is in the most dangerous mission of her life. She has 20 seconds—and 20 pages of real-time action—to escape a Cobra base on a snowy mountain of death. G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Jinx #1 is part of Skybound’s “Silent Mission” G.I. JOE month, honoring the classic G.I. JOE tale.
Co-written by Dani and Dan Watters, G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Jinx #1 is a solid story, not only delivering an excellent “silent” story but combining that with a sense of time and urgency. Jinx has infiltrated a Cobra base and planted a bomb. She has 20 seconds to escape. Each page is one second, delivering an intriguing visual countdown.
Dani and Watters craft a story and a presentation that plays off the “silent” aspect so well. As a reader, I found myself lingering on the page, looking at the detail, and mentally putting together the obstacles the lay ahead for Jinx to escape to safety.
The art is really interesting. Dani provides the art with Brad Simpson on color and it’s a style that feels reminiscent of 80s Frank Miller with its minimal use of color and use of shadows, interesting angles, and intriguing page layouts. The comic visually is solid with a brutality to it that feels enhanced in a way by the lack of dialogue. There’s no need, the visuals tell you everything you need to know.
G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero – Jinx #1 is a solid homage and way to honor the classic G.I. JOE tale that the concept spins out of. It has a style that feels like it’s out of the 80s in some ways, with a dirty, gritty look that focuses in on the action. It might not have any “words” but it’s a comic you’ll linger on the page pouring over the details of the art which tell you all you need to know.
