Tabletop RPG enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to revisit one of the most ambitious adventures in RPG history. World’s Largest RPGs has announced the release of the World’s Largest Dungeon: 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition, a fully updated version of the legendary mega-dungeon campaign for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (5E). The crowdfunding campaign is set to launch on May 13, via BackerKit.
Originally published in 2004 by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG), The World’s Largest Dungeon earned a Guinness World Record for its unprecedented size and scope. The campaign, designed to take players from level 1 to 20, features every monster from the System Reference Document (SRD) and offers an interconnected, inescapable dungeon experience. It quickly became a hallmark of tabletop RPGs, known for its sprawling labyrinth of traps, factions, and secrets.
Now, World’s Largest RPGs is bringing this iconic dungeon back to life with a Platinum Edition that builds on the original while introducing new content and enhancements. The updated edition will include 16 new boss miniatures, curated miniature sets from Reaper Miniatures, and 16 poster-sized maps alongside new detail maps. Over 1,600 original encounters have been fine-tuned for modern gameplay, and the edition will feature exclusive Fanroll dice, an audiobook by AudioRPG, and new stretch goal content.
One of the standout features of the Platinum Edition is the inclusion of Secret Door Encounters, self-contained dungeon expansions crafted by a variety of talented RPG authors. These adventures introduce unexpected twists, hidden threats, and entirely new ways to experience the dungeon. Industry veterans such as Robert J. Schwalb (Shadow of the Demon Lord), Timothy Brown (Dragon Kings), and Leamon Crafton (Torg Eternity) have contributed to this new content.
The Platinum Edition also introduces a Secret Door Adventures Contest, hosted in partnership with Portals to Adventure. Aspiring RPG designers can submit their own dungeon encounters, with fan-voted winners earning a spot in the Secret Doors book alongside contributions from established creators. Timothy Brown, CEO of Portals to Adventure, described the contest as a first in the industry, offering new writers a chance to showcase their work, earn prize money, and be published as part of the World’s Largest Dungeon Platinum Edition.
Original lead designer Jim Pinto has returned to the project, redesigning the infamous first level and crafting a new adventure to introduce players to the dungeon. The Platinum Edition will be released as a four-book set, updated for modern play while preserving the original’s depth and challenge. Each book features unique fantasy artwork, immersive page layouts, and rich world-building details, making it easier than ever for game masters to navigate the dungeon’s encounters and secrets.
