All MTG sets in order, as of February 2025

Wizards of the Coast has released 179 MTG sets over the game’s 32-year history: an average of five new sets per year. To help you keep track, and to provide a full timeline that goes right back to the beginning, we compiled this complete list of all Magic: The Gathering sets ever made, as well as the new card collections about to join the party.

We list all the upcoming Magic sets first- for more details on those, read our up-to-date MTG release schedule. After that, our total of 179 counts all Core, Standard Expansion, Supplemental, Starter, and Compilation sets since 1993, as well as the jokey ‘Un-Sets’.

Then there are a further 33 sets that consist of MTG Commander precons and seven sets for other multiplayer formats. We haven’t counted the digital-only Alchemy sets that fuel your favorite MTG Arena decks! You can also hop to our FAQ segment below for some helpful facts and trivia about the history of Magic: The Gathering sets.

Magic: The Gathering sets FAQ

Above are all the sets, right back to the very beginnings of Magic: The Gathering – but if you’re new to the game, some more info might be in order. Here’s the lowdown on how these releases work.

What are MTG sets?

Most Magic: The Gathering sets aren’t individual boxed products on a shelf, like Lego sets or Warhammer 40k box sets. Instead, an MTG set is a distinct, named new collection of MTG cards released and added to the game’s existing pool of playable cards.

Depending on the type, each set will normally have its own theme, either based around a particular fictional setting in the lore, or perhaps tailored to one particular mode of play, like Commander or Modern (these are called MTG formats).

When do new MTG sets come out on MTG Arena?

Currently, every new Standard set releases on MTG Arena a few days before the physical products are available in stores.

Most new Standard sets also herald an Alchemy release of about 25-30 Arena-only cards that are not produced in physical form. These cards are specially designed to work best in the digital format. They often include mechanics that would be impractical in regular Magic, such as summoning random creatures from your deck, creating new cards, or permanently altering others.

How many cards are in each MTG set?

Each new MTG set normally contains somewhere between 200 and 300 cards. The selection almost always includes a mixture of brand new cards (where the card name, in-game rules, and art are all new) and ‘reprints’ (new versions of existing popular cards, which keep the same name and rules, but may feature new artwork).

What is the biggest MTG set ever released?

The biggest single MTG set ever released was the Fifth Edition core set in 1997, which had 449 new cards in total, including 20 Basic Lands.

Other massive sets from the early era of Magic include its immediate predecessor, 1995’s Fourth Edition core set, with 363 cards; 1996’s Mirage, with 350, and 1997’s Tempest, which also added 350 cards to the game.

Sets started becoming smaller during the aughts, although 2007’s  Lorwyn bucked the trend with a mighty 301 cards.

How many MTG sets are released each year?

Currently, Wizards of the Coast releases around ten MTG sets per year. We get four full ‘Standard’ sets annually (about one every three months) and between four and eight smaller sets – usually focused on specific formats, or revisiting a popular past setting with additional cards.

In addition, Wizards releases what it calls ‘MTG Secret Lair drops’, which are much smaller, limited edition print runs of specially designed cards aimed at collectors – often themed around franchises, fandoms, or art styles outside of Magic.

What products come with each MTG set?

Every time a new MTG set is released, Wizards of the Coast produces a range of different products containing the new cards, in different configurations, for various types of players.

Currently, every main MTG set releases with:

  • Play boosters – packs of 14 random cards including at least one Rare or Mythic Rare
  • Collector boosters – packs of 15 random cards including 4-5 guaranteed Rares and Mythic Rares, plus special art cards
  • Bundles – a mixed box containing 9 play boosters, 30 land cards, and accessories like tokens and counters
  • Commander decks – pre-built 100-card decks for the Commander (EDH) game format. Each set normally has at least four of these, also called Commander precons.
  • Prerelease pack – A box sold at prerelease events, with six Play boosters, one promo card (a foil Rare or Mythic Rare stamped with the year), a deck box, MTG Arena code, and spindown die with the set symbol.
