Two new films topped the weekend box office in an otherwise middling weekend. Dog Man grossed an estimated $36 million domestically in its debut weekend as well as $4.6 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $40.6 million. It’s been an odd year for family films and I’d have expected a bit more considering how popular the graphic novels are. The debut is a bit higher that expectations/projections for the debut. As has been shown with Mufasa, Wicked, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, family films right now have very long legs, so this one will likely need to be judged over a long time.
In second place was Companion which opened with $9.5 million domestically and $5.5 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $15 million.
Mufasa: The Lion King slipped to third place with an estimated $6.1 million to lift its domestic total to $229.5 million and over the week it grossed $17.9 million internationally to lift that to $423.5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed over $653 million.
One of Them Days came in fourth place with $6 million to bring its domestic total to $34.5 million. Internationally it has grossed $71,194. Worldwide, it has grossed a little over $34.5 million.
Flight Risk took a dive from last week’s first place grossing $5.6 million to come in fifth. Domestically, the film has grossed $20.9 million, and internationally it has grossed $4.2 million for a worldwide total of $25.1 million after two weeks.
