‘Pokemon TCG’ Surges Back to Life; Four of the Big Five Head Out of 2024 Strong

Pokemon TCG: Surging Sparks Booster Box took the top spot on the TCGplayer Top 25 Sealed Products chart for November 2024 (see “November 2024“). The new chart reaffirmed some of the trends going on as the TCG market begins to wrap up 2024.

2024 enters its final month with a big “clap back” for Pokemon TCG. The powerhouse TCG brand had been building a little steam coming out of the fall months after being on the ropes for most of the year (see “More Top End TCG Jockeying“). As noted in last month’s analysis, Surging Sparks had some fire behind it in preorder (see “Fire“), and its popularity went into a full-on raging inferno on the November 2024 list. The momentum behind this product also dragged other, once left for dead Pokemon TCG booster products along with it up the charts. It took about a year, but Pokemon TCG is back with a vengeance!

Other members of the Big Five carved up the rest of the November 2024 chart. Magic and the ultra hot One Piece CG both turned in stellar performances. Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG only had one product up on the charts, but as noted in aforementioned chart article, it was at #4 on the list. These four games seem to have cemented their place in the TCG market.

However, there is a bit of a battle going on for the fifth TCG in the Big Five. Disney Lorcana has been in a bit of slump, as the game’s “new TCG smell” wears off from its 2023 release year. Star Wars Unlimited, on the other hand, finally found its “new TCG smell” after the release of its third set. Early on, Star Wars Unlimited was having supply issues (not enough supply for demand), but they seem to have resolved that and now fans are picking up the game. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when Fantasy Flight inevitably starts adding more SKUs for Star Wars: Unlimited. Ravensburger may have a fight on its hands there, as two Disney licenses battle it out for spots on the charts.
