In addition to looking scrumptious, the food in Pokémon Horizons: The Series serves a greater purpose. Food is a source of connection, a way of communicating, nurturing, and evolution that brings people and Pokémon together. Savor the journey with these 10 tasty moments from Pokémon Horizons: The Series. Just be sure to read on a full stomach!
In “Found You, Fuecoco!” (Episode 5), Roy’s grandfather invites the Rising Volt Tacklers to eat lunch with the islanders. Much to Friede and Liko’s surprise, the local wild Pokémon help prepare the meal, each playing to their respective strengths. Mankey harvests Pecha Berries from a tree, Krabby helps chop Oran Berries with its claws, Charmander keeps the fire hot as the soup cooks, Squirtle helps wash the vegetables, and Bulbasaur pours the tea. It almost doesn’t matter what the food tastes like, because the inspiring show of cooperation between humans and Pokémon nourishes the soul as well as the stomach.
In “Special Training with Cap!” (Episode 7), Liko’s Sprigatito and Roy’s Fuecoco are having a practice battle with Captain Pikachu, but it’s not going particularly well. When Murdock insists on a lunch break, they find not only a delicious-looking spread of food—exactly what we’d expect of Murdock’s cooking—but also an opportunity for the new Pokémon Trainers to get to know their Pokémon. Sprigatito likes bitter flavors while Roy and Fuecoco love spicy food. This leads to an important moment of recognition for Liko who says, “I guess everyone has different tastes they like…Sprigatito seems to enjoy green tea’s flavor. I should remember what my partner likes.” While food can provide the necessary fuel for battle, it also offers a form of connection between people and Pokémon—Liko and Sprigatito in particular.
In “The Door That Never Opens” (Episode 8), Murdock spends his free time trying to find a dish that Dot likes. We learn that Dot doesn’t eat meals with the rest of the crew, instead consuming gummy vitamins to obtain nutrition. Murdock explains to Liko, “She’s not into food. Never has been.” But it becomes clear that to Murdock, cooking is a way to show how much he cares, and his effort to make food that his niece enjoys shows how much he cares about her. When we finally get to see Dot take a bite of a delicious-looking donut that Murdock made for her, it’s a sweet victory, both for Murdock and for Dot. She even tells Quaxly, “I didn’t know things could taste like this.”
In “An Unexpected Picnic!” (Episode 13), the Rising Volt Tacklers take on a classic and appetizing Paldean activity: the picnic! Unsurprisingly, Murdock goes all out when it comes to preparing sandwich ingredients for the crew. Friede gets philosophical, claiming, “The sandwich is an expression of the self!” And he’s right: we learn more about each character’s personality from the sandwiches they build. Liko’s timid in the beginning, not wanting to use too many ingredients. Meanwhile, Roy dives right in, stacking as many ingredients as possible. And although Dot doesn’t want to leave the Brave Olivine, Liko ensures that she doesn’t miss out by bringing the picnic to Dot.
In “Fly! Wattrel!” (Episode 14), Liko and Murdock are heading into town for some supplies when they spot an ice cream cart. Of course, the duo and their Pokémon partners Rockruff and Sprigatito take a break from their errands to enjoy the sweet treat. Their interlude serves as a happy moment and a good reminder to take time out of the day for delicious surprises.
In “The Bittersweet Truth”(Episode 19), Dot asks Liko, Roy, and Murdock to bring her some Swirlicious Cotton Candy from the Battle Café at Motostoke so that she can use it as a prop in a new Nidothing video. But to get the cotton candy, they have to battle Mitchell, Murdock’s former friend and current rival. Thankfully, Murdock and Mitchell manage to patch things up after a Pokémon battle becomes a cake-baking battle. There’s no better way to make up than sharing a tasty treat!
In “Reunion at the Ancient Castle!” (Episode 24), we finally get to meet Liko’s grandma, Diana. During their reunion, Diana serves Liko, Friede, and Roy a dinner of canned goods, straight out of the can. And when Liko expresses concern that the canned food should be reserved for emergencies, her grandma insists: “Canned food is my go-to! It’s better than anything else. And then there’s no dishes to do. Perfect, right?”
Does the meal look particularly delicious? Not really. Compared to Murdock’s home-cooked meals, canned food could never compare. But there’s something about the meal that reflects Diana’s love of adventure. So, despite the fact that this is far from a gourmet meal, it’s a memorable one.
In “As Long as I’m with My Friends!” (Episode 27), the Rising Volt Tacklers season the day during some downtime in the Wild Area of the Galar region and make curry. When Liko and Roy discover that Dot’s never had curry, Liko declares, “Other than Pokémon, curry is the most amazing thing in the world!” Of course, Liko and Roy each prepare their own curry for the group based on the way their family prepares curry at home. And while it’s true that the episode gets a little cheesy when Liko and Roy insist that heart is one of the five key ingredients to making curry, at the end of the day, Dot enjoys her very first taste of curry.
In “Slip and Crash! A Mystery Pokémon?!” (Episode 30), a rogue Polteageist sneaks aboard the Brave Olivine. When the Black Tea Pokémon happens to overhear Dot exclaiming, “Shuckle’s Berry Juice is the absolute best,” it becomes fixated on Shuckle. With help from Captain Pikachu, Polteageist challenges Shuckle to a battle to determine which Pokémon produces the superior beverage. This battle somehow becomes an impromptu tea party, with all the Pokémon aboard the Brave Olivine taking part in the revelry. It’s a charming albeit unorthodox moment…and a reminder that a Pokémon can enjoy tasty treats—and drinks—just as much as a human can.
In “Respective Departures” (Episode 34), Liko throws her grandmother a going-away party—complete with a curry feast and a special cake made by Murdock and Alcremie! Despite the fact that we’ve seen some appetizing dishes, both savory and sweet, over the course of Pokémon Horizons: The Series, this food feels extra special because of the emotion behind it. Liko is going to miss her grandmother, and the entire crew wants to express their gratitude for everything Diana has done for them. In this case, food is an expression of connection and sentiment. And it still looks delicious!
There are plenty more delicious moments ahead as Liko, Roy, Dot, and the Rising Volt Tacklers continue their adventures.
