IDW Bets Big on Godzilla with New Continuity, Heist Comic, More

IDW Publishing will reboot its Godzilla comics in its Free Comic Book Day 2025 comic, but even before then, the publisher has plans for some innovative kaiju comics.

Godzilla: The New Heroes FCBD 2025 will usher in a new continuity for Godzilla and other kaiju.  “This FCBD issue will introduce readers to new characters, premiere new Kaiju, and serve as the launching point for our new Godzilla continuity,” Godzilla line editor Jake Williams said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “We challenged ourselves to build up a world around Godzilla that is as interesting as the King of the Monsters itself. A new continuity filled to the brim with super powered humans, kaiju half breeds, stories across Earth and Space, and a fresh new take on Godzilla itself.  All in service of one singular goal: tell Godzilla stories that can only exist on the pages of a comic book.”

While the FCBD comic won’t be out until May 2025 (see “Silver Sponsors Announced”), three newly unveiled series give a hint of what is to come.

Godzilla: Heist, by Van Jensen and Kelsey Ramsay, features a robber who has figured out how to make Godzilla appear and uses that power to pull off heists.  That works great until he attracts the attention of the wrong people.  The first issue will be released on February 4, 2025, with covers by Bob Eggleton and Danny Earls.

Godzilla vs. America: Chicago is the first installment of an anthology series in which Godzilla will travel the country, presumably wreaking havoc along the way.  Chicago-based creators Ryan Browne, Caroline Cash, Mike Costa, Ezra C. Daniels, and Tim Seeley collaborate on four stories about Godzilla menacing the L, a sporting event, and a new Chicago-based superhero.  The 48-page issue, priced at $7.99, will go on sale on February 26, 2025, with covers by Browne and Seeley.

While Mothra has appeared in Godzilla comics, Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, by Sophie Campbell and Matt Frank, appears to be the character’s first solo comic.  Mothra has fallen in battle, and the earth has become a wasteland, as this story opens.  To bring the creature back, twin sisters accompanied by two fairies must travel back to the Jurassic era and bring back its egg.  The first issue will be released on March 5, 2025, with covers by Frank and Campbell.

IDW has a deal with Toho International to produce comics based on Godzilla and other Toho properties (see “IDW and Toho Ink Monster ‘Godzilla’ Deal“).
